Apocalypse Now & Heart of Darkness

Both are excellent. I don't know if it's necessary to read the book first. The two are sufficiently different that if you go into each without analyzing the similarities right away, you should be okay. ell

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

I can't deny that shootouts are fun and exciting to watch, but I still don't see the necessity of declaring a winner. I don't mind ties. Sometimes games deserve to end in a tie. If two teams have played hard for 60 minutes plus a five minute, sudden death overtime and are still tied, it...

    Fav chocolate/sweet thing?

It's a toss-up between chocolate-covered macadamia nuts and Cadbury's Burnt Almond bars (dark chocolate with chunks of toasted almonds).

    Hyperlinking: How to do it

I've just been checking it out. You can still hyperlink with the buttons but you must do it manually using the VBulletin codes. For example, if you want to hyperlink http://www.bookandreader.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode If you don't want the entire url to show and want it to be called...

    Thomas Pynchon

You're right, it did feel like a movie. I recently watched "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and Lot 49 came to my mind's eye in the same sun-glaring, desert-washed, sandy hues. I was a bit shell-shocked after finishing and need to let it settle a bit in my head. When I get my thoughts...

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

I completely agree. I HATE shootouts! . . . or a basketball game with free throws. Apart from the shootouts, I must say I like the changes, if the first week is any indication of the rest of the season. There's more scoring, the tempo is faster and there's better flow to the game. The...

    Too good to read.

Martin, yes, yes and yes. :D I go one step further. When I really like a book, I'll get to the last dozen pages or so, then stop -- because I don't want it to end. It may take me up to a week before I pick it up and finish. How crazy is that?! ell

looking for book with an interesting female character

For 'slutty', you could try Madame Bovary. ;) Young woman marries to get out of home, becomes a bored housewife, married to boring doc, jumps at any male who'll rescue her from humdrum existence . . .

    Neal Stephenson

The aforementioned Snow Crash is much shorter and worth trying if you want to get a feel for Stephenson. ds - love your new purple suit & hat. :)

looking for book with an interesting female character

It seems like you're going about this the wrong way 'round. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't your assignment to find a character from literature and then place/reinvent them in the present? You've already decided you want a character that is involved in drugs, sex and gangs. Why not find an...

    Fish

Can I come to your house for dinner? Sounds marvelous! I love all kinds of fish and seafood and could eat sushi almost every day. Sometimes I think I'm pushing it with the mercury levels and all, but I figure at this stage of my life it can't do much more to my brain cells that hasn't...

    Short Stories or Novels?

I read far more novels than short stories. I don't have a preference of one over the other because I like both forms but for different reasons. Novels have the luxury of developing characters and back-story. As a reader, you can sit back and immerse yourself in a different world, mull things...

    There's Porno in that book!

Uh-oh. I'm in trouble then. I better hide my tie-dyed head scarves and flowy skirts. And thanks Ronny and leckert - it seems appropriate for the times. :) Back on topic: It seems sex is the hot-button, but I'm sure there are parents that get just as upset about graphic violence. In my...

    There's Porno in that book!

  Did I miss something? (Of course it wouldn't be the first time.)

    There's Porno in that book!

If this book was assigned to mainstream juniors, I might think it too mature to discuss in school (we're talking 16, 17 year-olds). However, this is for the International Baccalaureate program. These are supposed to be advanced students studying English at a university level. The real...

    Barbara Walters

Yes it has. Sorry for the late post, but I just couldn't let this pass: Does this mean "resorting to ad hominem" can't be interesting, half-way intelligent or result in something substantial and of significance? Seems to me, some of the most interesting discussions I've had were ad...

    Stewart's new avatar

Still, I'm with you. No idea who the avatar character is. I already have pretty entrenched ideas about Stewart's sense of humour, so a new avatar isn't about to change them. ;)

    Book on basic car maintenance

Shade, I was going to recommend the same thing. Take one of those basic auto-mechanic classes or something specifically designed for women who don't know much about cars. The ones that give you 'hands-on' experience are very good. ell
