    Modern classics of all kinds

I'm not saying it's confusing and I'm not trying to be argumentative either. It's just that it is hard to pin down language that everyone can agree upon.

    Modern classics of all kinds

Along the same lines as Peder's previous comment: - What's considered "remote past"? - What's considered "recent times'?

    Suggestions for English books

How about Watership Down? It's a very engaging story and the reading level should be appropriate for you. It can be read as a simple story about rabbits or analyzed more deeply. Or maybe The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins? Merged.

    Which e-reader do you own?

(I'm not sure if I should post this here or start a new thread, so mods, please move if you see fit.) My original, 4 years old Kobo Wifi finally went to the great e-heaven in the sky. One evening it was working, next morning - dead. I tried the usual re-set, internet search for solutions...

    Lee Child: Killing Floor

    You're right -- an uncanny resemblance! :D

    Philip K. Dick: Martian Timeslip

I'm pretty sure Dick wasn't trying just to be 'clever'. I believe he used the repeated passages to show the space/time-travel/schizophrenia and confusion experienced by the main character. I thought it was rather well done.

    A Prayer for Owen Meany?

I've never read anything by Conroy, so not sure what you mean by engrossing and emotive. I really enjoyed A Prayer for Owen Meany. There is much dark humour in it, which I like, but is not for everybody.

    Philip K. Dick: Martian Timeslip

It felt a bit like Murakami's iQ84 the way he played with time and reality. I liked it too. :)

    Lee Child: Killing Floor

I agree. In the books, Reacher's physical appearance is often pivotal in how other characters respond/react to him. Do they back down and run? Do they get all macho and escalate a confrontation? Do they dismiss him as a thug? These all have to do with his physical appearance. Not a small...

    Booker Prize goes Hollywood?

What an old thread to have been resurrected! An update for those interested: As of 2013, the Man Booker is open to all books written originally in English and published in the UK.

Windows 8 : Anybody else using it?

Totally agree. Unfortunately, I needed a new laptop for work, so I'm stuck with Windows 8 for the mo. Horrible, horrible os. Unwieldy and not at all intuitive.

    2013 Nobel Prize in Literature

I don't know that I can pinpoint one particular story. I've always read her stories as part of a collection and, to me, they are best read that way. I tend to get immersed in the world she creates with her characters and just fall headlong from one story to the next. So, I would say just...

I don't think you were looking at the main discussion threads. It may be that you need to join in order to see all of the forums. I can't remember now. The way I see the forum is that the top portion of the forum is the welcome and introduction section, then below it are general interest book...

    2013 Nobel Prize in Literature

I've been a longtime fan of Alice Munro and extremely happy she received the Nobel. I think short stories are under-appreciated by many readers. So difficult to do well. Marvelous when they work.

    Underlining: Addition or Subtraction

I agree. If I think something is significant or interesting, I'll use small post-it/sticky notes. I had a lot if stickies in Gravity's Rainbow! Sent from my iPhone using Book And Reader

There are lots of groups for in-depth discussion. One I like is Constant Reader - intelligent, mature readers who go beyond, "it was great, loved it" comments. Different groups for different types of readers. Sent from my iPhone using Book And Reader
