So ds, did you finish Quicksilver and go on to the next two volumes of the Baroque Cycle?
I got bogged down in Quicksilver several times and had to restart. I'm now back at it. It flows much better when I can devote quiet, uninterrupted time to the reading. Stephenson's books always need my...
Why I love my e-reader, but still like to keep my physical books:
I have a great fear of an impending apocalypse whereby all electrical (digital) media will be rendered useless. Cue Snake Plissken: He enters code 666.
Or how about:
Someone decides we should just scan and digitize all the...
Over the years, I've had many different avatars on the Book Forum.
My current one is a photo of a hibiscus I took in Hawaii. My Facebook page has a picture of a different one. I'm always in search of the perfect hibiscus. :)
Yes, so do I. If I really love it and must have it on my shelf , then I'll wait for it to go on sale or to remainders before I buy it. For example, I read a library copy of Year of the Flood shortly after its release, then waited for it to go on sale and picked up a hard cover edition for $6...
Twenty-two for me. East of Eden is one I've not read.
Ulysses isn't on this list, is it? I like picking it up from time to time just to read excerpts out loud. It has one of the best openings: "Stately Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a...
LOL. When I punch in the amount of cooking time on my microwave, I try to fit in an 8 somewhere. My favourite is "1-0-8" because in Cantonese it sounds like "yut ding fat" (most certain wealth). Sometimes I use "1 -2 -8" which sounds like "yut yee fat" (easy wealth) if I need a bit more...
I had mixed feelings about this book. It was fun to read for the most part -- one of those read late into the night until finished books. Ronny, your question prompted me finally to add my review to the Goodreads site. I'll be lazy and just paste it here:
I cut my sci-fi teeth on Asimov! I still have the original Foundation and Robot series on my shelf, yellowing and fading. Can't bring myself to get rid of them.
I am a publisher's worst nightmare. I buy almost all my books on sale or from the bargain bin. Most I've spent on a fiction book is probably around $25 CAD.
Ooh, and I'm really good at getting people to gift me books for birthdays and Christmas. :)
Thank you all (I think). At least I'm not left SMH. OTOH you might have opened a COW because all I can do now is think of alternatives for AIE. Hmm, Antiquated Indigenous Elders, Ambivalent Internet Elephants, Associated Incompatible Extras, . . . . .
Off topic here, but I've seen AIE a couple of times on the forums and I can't for the life of me figure out what it means. (Some internet search results: Acceptance Inspection Element, Advanced Instructor Exam, active infective endocarditis, . . .?)
If you haven't tried Eco's fiction before, I'd recommend reading Name of the Rose before Foucault's Pendulum. FP is packed with all manner of arcana and a labyrinthine plot - things I like in a book, but not everyone's cuppa.
