I'm a convert. I got a Kobo-Wifi for my birthday and I love it! I thought I'd only like an ereader for the portability when travelling, but I was wrong. It's very easy on the eyes, good for reading in bed (light-weight, one-hand hold) and I can slide it into any purse for reading anywhere...
I think both "Life of Pi" and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" would be fine. I've not read "A Thousand Splendid Suns", so can't comment on it specifically.
I think what you choose depends on his reading and maturity level. My guess is that he reads above grade level and...
Bless you, OReillysRose. You have taken up the gauntlet. Perhaps you can get through to Pontiac. Many here have tried with little success.
Until Pontiac (aka AquaBlue) is willing to do re-writes, I don't think there's much hope for improvement.
Are you listening, Pontiac?
Harry was in his little house on the edge of Back Bay when at half past twelve her voice came over the radio for the first time.
- Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay
I've read nine:
The Sea by John Banville
The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst
Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre
Life of Pi by Yann Martel
True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey
The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
The English Patient by...
I know 4 of the 8 and will be adding at least a couple of the unknowns to my TBR list. I'd like to vote for something I haven't read yet. Is it okay to vote even if I won't be around when discussion starts in January?
I've done a search for other posts with your writing and see that various BAR members have given you similar advice and critiques. May I suggest that, besides writing more Brainstorms, you also try and fix what you've already written.
Have you tried abebooks.com?
Around $100. It was a gift for a friend. I've never spent that much on a book for myself. I look for book sales and frequent second hand shops.
Okay, since you asked me for feedback on the other thread, I'll start with just a few of the problems I see in your first paragraph.
Your second and third sentences are contradictory. You say Jack “knew” the samples were causing “devastating consequences”, then, you say he did not suspect...
I hope you think it over before you do this.
Since it's your first tattoo, perhaps it should be something more personal (significant). I thought you were going to get a tattoo of your father's name.
Aquablue, how do you think these exercises will improve your writing? Are you asking for serious feedback on these posts or are you just showcasing "weak points and such things"?
I found the first few chapters slow-going, but it hooked me from about Chapter 5, December 26 (page 131 in my copy).
I thought it was a good translation, but think I know what you mean about translations, in general - sometimes the language can sound a bit stilted or awkward in places. I find...
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson
Open - Andre Agassiz
I quite enjoyed TGWTDT and look forward to the next two in the series. Interesting comments about Smilla Jasperson versus Lisbeth Salander.
The Forever War by Joe Haldeman.
It was not at all what I expected -- a hard sci-fi war story with an interesting protagonist and great ending.
:stars4:
Pontalba, somehow I missed this comment.
If you liked PR, you should like Spook Country - very much the same world. There is some overlap with the Hubertus Bigend character and Blue Ant. :)
I've run across his same threads in two other book forums. Same m.o. - starts numerous threads, doesn't return to discuss. Pretty sure he just wants people to click on his profile links. Therefore, :spam:
