J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

I read these books once a year, starting with the Hobbit so I may be biased, but I think that there will definately be things thatyou will miss when you read them. I picked up a new thing, or appreciated something in a different way everytime that I have read them. I would say that I almost...

    Stephen King

I love most of them. If I had to suggest one to get you started, I would say Pet Semetary as it is scary and a good example of his early work. If you are more interested in mainstream fiction, I would say Different Seasons, which contains The Body (Stand by Me) and Rita Hayeworth and the...

    Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time

I have read it and look forward to January when #10 comes out. I really enjoyed it for 3 or 4 books and then Jordan lost his way. Too many plot threads at this point. I am still enjoying it but that is now tainted by an idea that he has ceased telling the story and started (only) cashing...

What do you use as a bookmark?

I hate folded pages. A couple of years ago I recieved an old $1 silver certificate in change at the food store. for those non-Americans, that is what the label used to say at the top of a dollare bill. It is from 1934. that is what I have used as a bookmark ever since. Mike

    Carrie sequel?

I do not think he will write a sequel b/c he has stated that he will not write the (planned) sequel to 'Salems Lot as too much time has passed. Carrie was written before 'Salems Lot so I would guess that the same reasoning would apply. Plus he is pushing through his Dark Tower series and...

Books not for sale in certain countries?

There are 5 regions to the world. North America and Europe are Regions 1 and 2 (I Think) What is available to rent or buy in one is not necesarily available in the other. In very few cases, are there worldwide releases on the same day of anything. I thnk the movie studios and distributers...

Books not for sale in certain countries?

I would be willing to bet that this is the same thing as the Region Encoding in the Home Theater World. Only, you can't make it so that people in other regions cannot read it. Mike

    The Best Character in Fiction?

The 2 standard answers that I usually hear are Boo Radley from To Kill a Mockingbird and Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby. I tend to throw in a character from Popular literature and include Roland from The Dark Tower Series. I think all are brilliant characters that are fascinating to read...

How we first came to books

Toby Took, you are exactly right about the dragonlance novels. Looking back those two trilogies are probably the only ones that are any good. As for the nickname, it is from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter Thompson. Mike

How we first came to books

How we came to reading I started reading for pleasure in the second or third grade. I picked up on the Choose Your Own Adventure series in the eighties and was hooked. Around fifth grade I read Stephen King's The Stand as my first adult book. My first exposure to Sci fi/Fantasy, was the...
