    Reading in a Foreign Language

I guess it's a problem in all multilingual countries. And since Belgium as a country was only thrown together 175 years ago and didn't really grow naturally, there's sometimes tension between the Wallons and the Flemish. Flemish isn't a recognized language as such, it's just a name given to...

Any ideas on how we can attract more posts in the non fiction section?

I hardly ever read entire non-fiction works myself and when I do, it's usually just a few chapters (the ones that interest me and help me in what I'm researching at that time). I honestly don't know what would get me to read more non-fiction and discuss it. Just keep posting threads and hope...

    Non-fiction Stephen King

Me too. I'm not too big on autobiographies, but I liked the way he handled writing On Writing... It was light reading, but you got something out of it too.

    Someone tell me this.

I think I'd want to buy too many books after reading those threads. It's self-preservation that I don't go in there. I think he's playing hard to get.

    Someone tell me this.

Thanks for looking that up for me! I never read the currently reading threads, so that would explain some things.

    Someone tell me this.

Everyone keeps talking about this, but I don't think I've seen such a thread yet. (Or maybe I'm just too stupid to realise ;) )

    Silent Movies

Does anyone here like to watch silent movies? I've only seen Prem Sanyas (1925), The Kid (1921), Броненосец Потёмкин (1925), Le Capitaine Fracasse (1929) and Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (1920) myself, but I've always found them very interesting to watch. My only problem with them seems...

    Stuck on an Island Question

Knock yourselves out, boys and girls. I've been meaning to install this for a while now (don't know if it's any good; just came across it one day), but since my computer isn't connected to the Internet right now...

    Someone tell me this.

I've tried explaining it a hundred ways already.

    Someone tell me this.

Yet it's still TheBookForum, not TheBookChat.

    Someone tell me this.

That's just the point. Quite a few threads don't even have a subject!

A Scandinavian movie. Are you watching it? I'm taping it myself.

    dogme95

No, no, no, Martin, it's not a dogme film. (let me quote myself: list) Lars von Trier did sign the vow of chastity though.

    Reading in a Foreign Language

My mother tongue is Dutch. I started learing French when I was seven, English when I was fourteen and German when I was sixteen. I'm only fluent in English and Dutch though. My French is good enough to read in and everything, but I just don't feel comfortable enough conversing in it on a high...

That's OK. Enthusiasm is good. ;)

Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark aren't dogme movies though.

Afraid not, no. Missing out on something big?

Are you sure? :p (Sorry, I just couldn't pass up this wonderful parallellism opportunity.)

    Reading in a Foreign Language

I taught myself English by reading as much English novels as possible. I sometimes regret this now, because I never did read much Belgian books growing up, but that can't be helped now, so I guess I should just be grateful my English is pretty good. French takes some more getting into for me...

I haven't. I've seen the first half of Dancer in the Dark, but somehow never got around to watching the second half. (A shame, really.) I'm going to watch (or tape) Dogville tomorrow though.
