The New Narcissism in Women's Fiction

Reminds me of movie "Little Children" I would not take it too close to one's hart. It is not only women, but also men who find lovers while married. I think it is completely symmetric. No female narcissism as such - just life And besides, here is a healthy look on the situation: 1). ALL...

Tell me what you read and I'll tell you who you are

Had it ever happened to you - you enter somebody's house, give a glance over the bookshelves, and you can figure out who is the person? I found myself scanning people's bookshelves automatically as I enter. If I enter a girl's house and it is full of cheesy romans (including "Little...

    The top 5 stolen books

I can't believe I am in this discussion, but what the hell... You're right, Newton came to Alexandria and he knew to read ancient Persian in Alexandria books :D . Very funny indeed:p . It adds to Newton's genius, doesn't it? I mean, I am thankful to Arabs/Persians for encryption and for...

    The top 5 stolen books

Wow, wow, wow, easy on Newton! We all own him so much! There are some discoveries that at times are being re-discovered, but easy on gravitation! It includes the second derivative (acceleration=second time derivative of space). So here no persian or arabic were anywhere around. It was...

    recommend an English book

"The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame Oscar Wilde's fairy tales... All of them! And any other books by Oscar Wilde- he is my favorite writer! Rudyard Kipling - a book called "Kim" is supreme! His English is weird, with imitation if indian English - for this very reason I had so...

    Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

I had EXACTLY the same thought when I read it! Kind of a "Quest" style: go-there-bring-me-that-and-we'll-see-what-would-be-the-next-task which will bring you to the finish! Well said!

    Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

Great book! I had a long flight of about 7 hours, and I had not pay attention how fast the time passed - I was so much into this book! To me it seemed that it took us only 5 minutes to hop over the Atlantic - probably it has to do something with general relativity :D I do not know...

Books you would NOT SUGGEST to your kids. Why? At what age would you recommend it?

I would not suggest reading Peter Pan for a kid (also for an adult it might be a waist of time). Too weird and cruel. I read it only as a grown up, and I was rather shocked at the cruelty. "Max and Moritz", also very cruel. But it makes more sense to suggest than not to suggest something...

    Favourite Biographies

Any soviet-time biography (about any Russian, Romanian, Polish, GDR... Yugoslavian... and so on ... person)? But readable, and not too ideologic?

I'd rather read Dan Brown than......

I read several of his books... It was my birthday present, ironically :) I am a physicist, and Dan Brown views of high-energy physics (were he talks about anti-matter) amused me a lot. Afterwards I found out that some people (even my friends!) actually bought it!!!! That's terrible! Which...

Please advise a book about fishes (for kids)!

Hi, May be somebody here can advise a colorful book about life in the sea/ocean life (sharks, anemone fish, corals, dolphins, sea turtles - and so on), for a 9-years old? The kids saw "Finding Nemo", and got excited, but I do not have any idea what kind of book on this subject I can find...

    Best/Worst of 2007

I found the following movies very enjoyable :) "The Simpsons Movie" "Beowulf" "Stradust" (Hm, the above movie collection looks a bit biased. But it seems that the fantasy and animation was good this year!) On the other hand, "Transformers" was BORING! I can't believe I spent my time...

"The Two-Mile Time Machine" or " Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World" ?

I am currently looking for a good, not complicated book on the (geo)history of our Earth - in order to get updated on our planet's ice ages, climate changes, life evolution. Had anybody read any of these books: ] Richard B. Alley: or Nick Lane Or may be somebody can advise a...

    your to-read list

I wonder - why you people do this to yourself? Why to keep lists? I think there are two types of people in the world: the ordered ones any chaotic ones. I am the definition of chaotic. I can not stand clean desks, lists, organized tours, deadlines or whatsoever. With the books, I go...

    Your favorite Nobel Prize author

I love Mann, too! The "Death in Venice" was so beautiful! My next Mann on TBR is "Joseph and His Brothers " The Wonderful Adventures of Nils - I read it as a child, and I was totally charmed. It was my first HUGE book! I think I was around 10 or 11 back then... Wow, I did not notice her on...

From the list of the Literature Nobel Prize winners - which can be found here - who is your favorite author, and which of his/her book did you like the best? Which books, on the other hand, you would not recommend for reading? I'll start: My favorite so far is José Saramago (Laureate of...

    Sir Walter Scott: Ivanhoe

I read it as a kid (12 years old) Back then, it was very romantic. Very noble. The funny thing was that my parents did not like this book for some reason. They told me that it was unreadable and boring. Normally they supported my wish to read - but strangely not with this book. I remember...
