I would suggest The Dark Tower series. The Gunslinger Savage Henry mentioned is the first in the series. My personal favorites are:
The Stand (one of his best)
It
The Shining
I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Enjoy and let us know what you think!
It happened again. I had this great response typed up and I got timed out. What am I doing wrong, Darren?
It's an interesting question, especially since my Masters Degree is in Communications (TV, Film, Drama). Films that are based on books are interpretations, therefore not the same...
I was in the process, the other day of, of writing a lengthy reply on the thread when I was timed out and lost it!
So frustrated, I gave up.
The short version is this: I believe fanfic is akin to leeching. . . even if the author has given his/her approval. Riding on the coat tails of...
Didn't think of that. Fifty years is a long time. I'd surely change in fifty years! Of course, the world changed in that time as well.
Also, the tone of the story is completely different. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.
I started reading the Hobbit this month, but it was promptly secreted away. I found it on my 10 year-old's desk. He seems to be enjoying it.
I also prefer the writing style of LOR over The Hobbit. I'm enjoying the story, however. Its great to learn about the backstory, so to speak...
Welcome to the new Teen and Young Adult forum! I hope we will attract readers of all ages who are interested in this genre.
Let's start things off with some of your favorite books. This doesn't have to be literary rocket science. It can be your guilty pleasure, if you are so inclined...
Thanks for the suggestion Prolixic. It might be just the think for my 10 year old, who goes for that sort of thing.
To you and other that have shown interest: Be sure to visit the new teen and young adult forum with your suggestions. I hope that we'll have some younger readers join in the...
My 10 year-old is working his way through "Series of Unfortunate Events". He's enjoying them, but not as much as he enjoyed Harry Potter. I'm having a hard time finding a book that can top those (at least in his learned opinion). He's reread the series several times.
I'm a very impatient reader. If a book does not hook me in the first two chapters or so, I usually give it up.
How about everyone else? How long will you stick with a book before deciding it's not worth the trouble?
To read or not. That is the question.
Perhaps someone who has LOR on hand can answer the question - where is the love story chronicled?
I don't want to give away too much since LOR is a discussion for next month and some of us haven't read - or re-read the trilogy.
