It will be interesting to see the difference between the visions of each director. I wasn't all that impressed with the adaptation of The Little Princess. Seems a bit flat to me. I loved the book as a child (along with The Secret Garden) and was sorely disappointed with the recent (1995) film...
silly me!
I just realized I didn't suggest my favorite book. What was I thinking!
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. I also just realized I promised a review on it. Oops.
It's scifi with a twist...actually a couple of twists. For those who shy away from scifi, I promise it's not what...
Sometimes the bad guys make the best characters. Javert is a very complex. I like that he doesn't go through a character change throughout the book. No transformation. Because he can't transform, can't change how he feels, his only alternative is to kill himself.
What a great tragic figure.
I, too, hated reading when I was a child. I began reading when I was about 13 or 14. My mom was into historical romance and one day I borrowed one and started reading. I never stopped after that.
I went to an Anne Rice book signing. She had it at an old church here in New Orleans. It was the perfect atmosphere for the signing. I have several first edition signed books by Anne. One of my friends go to every one she has. She sometimes has blood drives at the same time and those that...
I think "A Book of the Month" is a great idea. Count me in.
On the avatar subject, I'm having difficulty finding one that fits the specs 64 x 64. Any suggestions?
I'm with you, Savage. I think Roland from The Dark Tower series is a good choice from modern literature. I'd have to go with Javert (spelling OK?) from Les Miz if we're talking classic.
Jane Austen
Sorry for the delay, Toby. I've been away from the forum for a bit. I would have to agree with your estimation of Emma. I remember when I started reading the book. I hated the character. Of course, once I got into the book, I really appreciated what Austen was doing.
I...
How about The Unabridged Shakespeare. I've had it since college and still refer to it occasionally.
It would come in handy. I could commit all the plays and sonnets to memory and entertain myself for years.
P.S. Hi, everybody. I've been away for a while. Good to see more action on...
I agree that the list of books available seem limited. I'd much rather visit a bookstore or library. The experience of finding a book is almost as fun as reading one.
Almost.
A bit hostile, but I do agree that it's a little too slow. I know there aren't many members, and even fewer that actually post, but I thought it would take off after a while. It was picking up for a couple of days and then POW nothing.
Let's get with it, people!
And bebe, put your...
Ha! I love it when I can make a point, since it happens so rarely.
Tobytook, I know that you know I was just pulling your leg. I knew you meant "in addition to" other qualifications. I also know that academics can have their own agendas.
Anyway, I think we could start a new thread on...
Re: Paradoxical but fun
Sorry, I just thought of something else.
Tobytook, do you teach?
In order for a novel to be featured in a teaching curriculum, it would have to be selected by the professor or by a selection committee, right? If this is true, any novel could be...
I guess that's what I was looking for. The definition itself implies subjectivity. Highest rank or excellence . . .
Who determines that? and based on what criteria? Many books are well written, but they aren't considered classics. One that endures the test of time and is well written...
I didn't realize my reference to "peanut gallery" would get so much play from the peanut gallery. I'll have to see if I come up with more good 'ole American slang.
How does a book attain "classic" status? Is it subjective, based on the opinion of the experts and readers, or is there an...
