My sincere apologies, Gryphon. It's Doyle, not McDowell. I made the mistake of asking my husband (thanks anyway, dear), since I couldn't remember the author.
The Van is part of the Barrytown Trilogy:
The Commitments (which spawned the movie)

I'm with you, Martin. I don't have much difficulty concentrating on a book. If I do, I quit. Of course, I'm reading for pleasure.
About Eon. I enjoyed it, but it did have a bit too much "tech-tale" for my taste.
I didn't particulary care for Artemis Fowl. My 13 year old son raved about it, sp I borrowed his first book. Can't really say why, except I didn't like the characters. Harry Potter has ruined me.

I read an article about it somewhere. I also thought it sounded interesting. If it comes to New Orleans, I'll probably check. The article mentioned that the book was hard to come by.
I enjoy my music and my books separately. I used to listen to music while reading when I was in college but found that I tended to either tune it out or lose my place in the book.
I haven't come up with a list, but I need one! Two of you listed Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I've been looking at that one every time I go to the book store.
The only one I know I have to re-read is the 4th Harry Potter. I'm about to shell out a lot of money for two copies of the...
