Wabbit, I did enjoy The Taking - its classic Dean Koontz and is one of the better ones of his I've read.
Its better in the first hundred or so pages though, you get the impression he wasnt sure how to finish the middle bit before heading to the denouement. Very atmospheric though, very scary...

The Princess Bride is a great book!! I read it in the library at Uni (ha! that got me some funny looks, reading a book with that title :D) - fantastically funny :)

Da Vinci Code is fun in a kind-of mindless way, Perdido Street Station is fantastic right up to the kind-of dodgy ending, but I'll let you decide for yourself :D

MR got Contact self published with a 1000 copies, each of which sold out very quickly and he landed himself a major publishing deal in about ten countries. Now he's a rich man!
Contest was written when he was about 18, and yes it is a little cliched, his later work is a lot better. FYI...
