What a dilemma! Recommend books he would like, and he wouldn't have an incentive to behave. Pile him up with chick lit or something, and he'd be careful to avoid punishment, but wouldn't develop the reading habit. Anyway, on topic: I think my problem might be the opposite of what...

    Non-fiction Stephen King

On Writing is more of an inspirational book, with only a little nuts-and-bolts instruction. I happened to get more inspiration out of Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott. I see On Writing as a guy's version of Bird by Bird, but I notice that some women here have enjoyed it too. For the practical...

    Rare books?

The links don't work, at least not on my computer. But anyway, Franklin Library books are not rare or valuable.

I despised the fourth Potter so much, I swore I would never read another. But the 14-year-old daughter of a friend of mine pleaded with me to read the fifth so we could talk about it, and now I...I... ...I... haveacrushonTonks! Whew. Thanks for letting me share that.

    Stand Up Comedy

Are you sure? His routine "Seven Words You Can't Say on Television," and a sequel, "Filthy Words," became the subject of a Supreme Court case on censorship.

It's Babysitters Club for me. Of course, I can't re-read all of them, but I collect the ones that resonated with me when I read them the first time around. I find it reassuring that a popular series deals with the issues I dealt with, even if the setting is too middle class for my tastes.

    Academic libraries becoming online centers

We have 2,000 books in our one-room apartment. The physical presence of books is important to me. We own quite a few books that are available full-text online, but we want to have them surrounding us anyway.

You really couldn't tell I was joking?

    Academic libraries becoming online centers

The article is deceptive. The undergraduate library is one building in a system of libraries that is spread all over the campus. The university isn't getting rid of books; it is only converting one of its library buildings into a computerized study center. There will still be as many books...

    Symbolic Boots

I admit I don't remember this theme in the book, though it was one of those books I was forced to read early in school, and I was only paying so much attention. Nevertheless, your comment reminds me that boots have an important role in Slaughterhouse Five. You might want to look into it. By...

The National Enquirer had a headline, "Ties Make Men Stupid." Now, how can you hate a newspaper like that?

ladies please read this for your own good

I sit at my home computer several hours a day. May as well be topless--it's just more comfortable. I've been doing it that way for years. Not much of a public display factor, though, so now I see that it hasn't necessarily been contributing to my long-term health. I'll move my computer by...
