    How do you feel when....

I expect the ending of a book to be so satisfying that I really feel I am finished with the story and with the characters. The ending of a good book makes it feel right that it's time to leave. Also, I usually think right away that I will reread the book sometime, so that's another reason I...

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Original Radio Scripts. What fun! (And the first book we could afford after our big splurge on the Oxford English Dictionary at an estate sale in May.)

    best book to movie adaptation

Room With a View is crisper than the book, but I still find it a delightful movie version. Maggie Smith is perfect.

    Reading more than one book?

Yes, I do that kind of counterbalancing too. In addition, here's how I answered this question in another thread: It seems like most of my books have bookmarks in them. I think I'm reading almost all of them at once. Different books for different moods, seasons, times of day. It's nice...

Do I have what it takes?

My new toy, the Oxford English Dictionary, includes two examples of fly being used in the plural, both from the 1950s, one by a writer born in Liverpool who was also an Oxford professor, the other by the great-grandaughter of Dickens. The OED also indicates that the fly was originally the...

    Should fireworks be outlawed?

I love sparklers. They are what really make July 4th happy for me. When I was little, we stuck lots of them in the grass and lit them all at once, so I was surrounded by them. "Just watch them" was the only rule we needed. And my boy cousins would throw cherry bombs or something like that...

Your Favorite Collection of Short Stories

"Flowers for Algernon" won the Hugo award for best science fiction novella in 1959. It has appeared in many anthologies. My favorite anthology that includes it is the collection of Hugo winners edited by Isaac Asimov.

Do I have what it takes?

Yeah, around July 4th isn't necessarily the best time to go ner ner to Americans.

    Oooh try this..she bends!

Ok, a little more practice and I can move her like a puppet. I can get her to sit in natural positions and move in ways that resemble dance--not ballet, perhaps, but at least modern dance. She can be rather comfortable and almost graceful. I figured it was the least I could do after pulling...

    Oooh try this..she bends!

With a little practice, you can fling her through the open sky. She flies almost gracefully.
