Adverbs should be replaced with specifics that readers can picture. While Stewart's example does a good job of identifying adverbs that are useful instead of redundant, a writer could take it even further. "Restlessly" labels what the dog did, but what does "restlessly" look and sound like...
Thank you, Novella, I was wondering if I should mention Ford's anti-semitism. As it happens, Thomas Edison was Ford's mentor on the subject of Jews. He obsessively coached Ford for years on the Jewish threat. It is almost impossible to find an untainted hero.
Classical music of the basic Mozart and Beethoven variety, though I've been getting into 40s jazz recently, such as Lester Young, and blues, such as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee.
Just so we all know what he's talking about here.
You might also notice that my earlier post showing my favorite didn't do two things: 1) it didn't use artwank to explain why I like it; 2) it didn't insist that anyone else like it. Notice that the thread didn't ask people to convince...
Everybody wants to tell their story. Let the press do your work for you. Get the paper to do an article on your idea (not a paid announcement), and as Novella said, get interviewed on local radio. You'll get more response than you can handle.

Anyway, the libraries here in DC are miserable, and the librarians don't seem to be encouraged to have a welcoming manner. Very few of them have...
I found this book affecting, and I recommend it. As you probably know from the TV version, it isn't about the horrors of nuclear war, but a study of a set of characters in a world where everyone is going to die at the same time in the near future. There is very little action, and the writing...
Okay, if not Grapes of Wrath, at least some Steinbeck should be required reading in the high school years. How about Of Mice and Men or The Moon is Down?
Another book occurred to me that is well-suited for teenagers: The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.
The 2006 novels one is due out August 5, 2005.
The 2006 agents one is due out July 27.
Frankly, if your novel isn't done yet, you can certainly wait until then; no need to squeeze in the 2005 editions in the meantime.
The Guide includes listings and advice. It is a whole package for getting an agent. It is updated annually, and only the latest year is useful.
While I'm at it, I should also recommend The Novel and Short Story Writer's Market, another annual book. This one does for publishers what the...
Hi. There are lots of stories about how someone didn't need an agent, didn't need a completed manuscript, etc. But the standard way to break in is to complete your manuscript and send queries to agents, and also to publishers that aren't agent-only. The number of such publishers is getting...
