    Have you ever....

Oh, well now that's true for me too--the thing about missing train stops (and bus stops). Some regular riders are kind enough to remind me when my stop is coming up, because I have a reputation for looking up eventually and saying, "Huh? Omigod!" Sometimes, my husband and I have been...

    Have you ever....

Heh--in a way, I wish I could use that as an excuse. When I put off responsibilities because I don't want to put down a book, I am all too aware of what I'm doing. I don't lose track of time, I use rationalizations instead: I don't have to go to the food store; maybe there's something in the...

Do you make yourself finish a bad book?

I was forced to finish enough bad books in school. No more!

    Internet Lurrrve.

Then there's kind of the opposite problem. A friend of mine doesn't easily fit gender roles. Or, as she puts it, she's a butch trapped in a fem body. When she's online, some guy inevitably says something like, "You know what? I think you're a man. You're just so out there about things." So...

What do you do with quotes?

This is the traditional use for the commonplace book. I keep one and I love it. It's a great habit to get into.

    What color are you?

I would like to be red for danger, but I'm not fooling anybody. I'm more like yellow for sunshine.

Which films or books have challenged the way you think?

The classic dystopias had a huge influence on my outlook. Examples would be: Fahrenheit 451 Brave New World 1984 I read them in a row when I was fifteen. They destroyed my complacency, and taught me about vigilance against the manipulation of reality.

How do you choose the book you'll read next ?

Basically, I stand in front of my to-read bookcase and fret. My choice for the next book does usually depend on mood. Or sometimes I choose a book that has a tone opposite the one I just finished.

    what's everyone up to today?

I spent maybe a little too much time seeing if I could rub my tummy and pat my head. After a little practice, I can.

    Favorite book store?

One of the public libraries in the suburbs here has a used book sale room. It seems to draw donated books from an unusually well read clientele. We take the long ride out there about once a month and come back with sacks of books.

Don't vocalize words in mind as read?

    1. Oh, so people read those things? 2. Yes, I know it's in my profile, but I needed to re-introduce the fact to set up the new information that followed. 3. I hereby edit my earlier post accordingly. Take the second paragraph as beginning with: "As some of you may know from my recent...

Don't vocalize words in mind as read?

Poetry is a special case. It is designed to be read out loud, so even vocalization in one's head isn't enough. I read poetry out loud. That's why I don't bring poetry when I need something to read on a bus. My husband and I read to each other a lot. It can highlight artfulness in the...

    Confessions of a Print Addict

Hi. My name is Mari, and I'm a printaholic. Er, except for newspapers. I'm so tired of getting ink on my hands. Yay for newspaper websites. Other than that, however, I make a ritual out of reading. My ideal way to read a book is to read a first edition, so that the experience will have...
