Can you ever catch up or is it a losing battle?

I already own enough books to take me the next forty years to read. And yet I 1) keep buying more, 2) reread. So yeah, it's hopeless.

Is it healthy to excessively think about your dreams or take pleasure in them?

I love to interpret my friends' dreams. I'm probably committing some kind of malpractice.

How can having a history book published by a university press help my resume?

Really? By a university press? That's great! That looks much better on your resume, especially because self-publishing does nothing for your resume. Don't worry about the money and small press run. If the book is a smash, it can be reprinted and marketed more widely.

Ever broken up with someone over books?

Hahahahaha. No, but I love the question. I do know a couple who broke up because he read only non-fiction and she read only fiction.

    christopher street day

Since Washington is the capital, the Pride Festival here is heavy on politics, and more serious than in other cities. Still, it is a time to renew the sense of community. My husband and I volunteer each year. It was just last weekend and we are still feeling the glow.

    Say something to the people

I don't know much about these things, but don't they sometimes get your email address and basically feed it back to you as the name on the spam? I assume that's what's happening with the mysterious (and apparently one-track-minded) Mari.

Which Perspective Do You Prefer, 1st Person or 3rd?

At first I thought I was going to say first person. I was going to say that third person is removed, cold, lonely. But then I thought of Virginia Woolf, for example, whose third-person narrators go so deep into the minds of the characters that it doesn't feel removed at all. I don't think...

Books I was supposed to love – but didn’t

This happens to me several times a day. I am bombarded with recommendations, and I'm certainly willing to try different books; but after about three pages, I'm usually muttering, "Were the editors asleep?" My biggest disappointment of this kind recently was Kavalier and Clay. A colleague of...

10 most dangerous books of the 19th and 20th century

I remember a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon that went something like this: Mom: How did you like that library book I got for you? Calvin: It gave me ideas and helped me see things in a new way. Mom: I'm glad you enjoyed it. Calvin: It's making my life complicated. Don't do it again.

    Favourite Poetry

"First Fig" by Edna St. Vincent Millay. And for those who think poetry has to be dense and stuffy, try this one, also by Millay: "Recuerdo" We were very tired, we were very merry-- We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry. It was bare and bright, and smelled like a stable...

    Choosing Your Next Book

There is definitely an impulse factor with me. If a book pops into my head for some reason--an association with something else in conversation or whatever--I will pull it off the shelf and start reading. I have many books going at once, and my mood will determine which one I return to at any...

    Favourite Poetry

I may be misunderstanding this comment, but here is another poem I like that in some ways is a mother/daughter sentiment along the same lines as Lee's father/son poem above: To A Daughter Leaving Home by Linda Pastan When I taught you at eight to ride a bicycle, loping along beside...

    Favourite Poetry

I'm one of those Literature degree types who study difficult poetry for fun. Two books that can help get you into poetry are: Good Poems, edited by Garrison Keillor. A popular and easy introduction. Staying Alive, edited by Neil Astley. This is my favorite collection. The poems take...
