    What do you do?

I'm a student, in my third year of a BSc with a double-major in Psychology and Philosophy (this is my last year - bachelors only take 3 years in NZ). Next year I'm hoping to do Honours in Psyc, and then head on to become a Clinical Psychologist.

    Lost: Season 5

It was the jumping around that I liked best about this season. It added a whole new depth to the series, and allowed re-analysis of almost everything that has happened so far. I should have known to go straight to the all-mighty one. Please forgive my mental slip, Your Greatness. P.S Thanks...

    Lost: Season 5

Can anyone add spoiler tags to this post? I didn't realise that .

    Lost: Season 5

Wow this season finale was amazing (although it was extremely obvious from the start that ... I'm so excited about next season (the last?). They've started answering so many questions already, and I can't wait to see how it all wraps up.

I hope so! I think I'll start Tipping the Velvet tonight, and I'll read A Confederacy of Dunces after that I think - I've been searching for that book for years.

    Vikas Swarup: Q & A

I've just finished reading this, and am not suprised to read that the plotline of the movie is very different to that of the book - I was wondering throughout my reading how they would manage to deal with the constant non-linear time shifts and how exactly that female actress became a star of...

    Philippa Gregory

I'm a big fan of her Tudor series, although I have yet to read The Other Queen. This thread and this thread contain past discussions of Philippa Gregory works in general, while this thread, this thread and this thread contain discussions on specific books. If you're interested :D

Do you read on public transport?

I always read on the bus. I have to make two two-hour bus trips to get to Uni and back, and it's a great way to pass the time. It's about the only reading time I manage to fit in when I'm at Uni.

March 2009: Edward P. Jones: The Known World

I think it's supposed to refelct how unremarkable the death of a slave, even a violent one, was in those times.

    Wilbur Smith

Same here. I thought that River God was fantastic and I always intended to read the rest of the series, but I'm usually pretty slack when it comes to following up books in series. I always forget and instead read books further up on my TBR list - the problem is that I usually don't add books in...

March 2009: Edward P. Jones: The Known World

I finished the book today, and overall I'd give it a 4/5. It would have been 5/5, but I didn't like the end very much. It felt really rushed and I think that Jones lost his unique voice in the last 50 pages or so. It became very to-the-point, losing the meandering style and pace that so endeared...

March 2009: Edward P. Jones: The Known World

I'm about halfway through, and absolutely loving it. I think that the comparison to One Hundred Years of Solitude is perfect (I loved that book also). The extra details keep the story fresh and exciting, and enable Jones to explore slavery from so many different angles. Some of my favourite...

    Current Non-Fiction reads

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm taking a Philosophy of Religion course this semester, and I've been trying to get my hands on good non-fiction in the area of religion. I find it fascinating.

    Current Non-Fiction reads

I'm sorry to be boring, but I didn't  The book itself was really interesting as I didn't know much behind the writing of the gospels and now have a fuller knowledge of that, but the arguments employed were quite shaky and had numerous holes. Their justification of why a caring, good God...

"Dune" As good as "Lord of the Rings"?

These two books are easy to classify, but others do become more shady. That's why the two genres are often merged into SFF, so you could argue that the two books actually come from the one genre. You can't strictly compare the two, but of course it's possible to say which one you enjoyed better.
