    Current Non-Fiction reads

Into the Darklands and Beyond: Unveiling the predators among us by Nigel Latta. A book about the psychology behind sexual and violent crime, written by a forensic psychologist and drawing on all the cases he's dealt with over the years (including some pretty high-profile ones here in New...

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

I'm in the Black Oaks in Southland, on the run from the Skull Bearers.

    The Last Book You Read

No Country for Old Men -- Cormac McCarthy. The almost bland prose being engaged to tell such a gory, dirty story worked exceptionally well. Usually I don't like punctuation being omitted, but it seemed appropriate in telling the story of no-nonsense country men. Gripping, although it began to...

    The Last Book You Read

Wuthering Heights -- Emily Bronte. Usually I'm not a huge fan of Victorian romance, but :stars4:

    Need a new VAMPIRE book

I Am Legend -- Richard Matheson (the movie starring Will Smith came from this book, but the book is much, much better). Here's a wiki page listing vampire literature.

    Google and books

I usually use wiki to learn more about the time period in which the book is set, and I try to keep a notebook next to me to keep track of the different things I want to look up when I'm next on the computer.

    Books for Christmas?

I got The Road by Cormac McCarthy (I've already read it, but it's nice to have a copy) and a book voucher.

    Alternating Genres?

My father only ever reads crime/mystery novels. And a little Christian non-fiction. Yawn.

January 2009: Tom Perrotta: The Abstinence Teacher

The idea sturck a chord with me, but Perrotta didn't add anything interesting for me to mull on. The thoughts that the idea raised in me were entirely my own; as BG mentioned, Perrotta seemed to just present the arguments without going any further. And that disappointed me.

    Alternating Genres?

I try to mix up my reads, shifting from classics to SFF to modern lit etc, although I try to only have one book on the go at once, otherwise I find that I muddle up the plotlines. In saying that, I do listen to non-fiction audiobooks when I go running each day. I tried fiction audiobooks, but I...

January 2009: Tom Perrotta: The Abstinence Teacher

I finished this book yesterday, and unfortunately found it as lacklustre as it seems everyone else has. There was the opportunity to tackle some interesting and important issues, but I felt that it was never really done properly. Neither Tim nor Ruth really fleshed out their arguments, each more...

    Richard Dawkins: The God Delusion

I'm re-"reading" The God Delusion at the moment in the form of an audiobook read by Dawkins himself (and his wife, to create a distinction between quotes and his own writing). I've always thought that he seems as though he feels himself superior to others, and this is even more striking when you...

January 2009: Tom Perrotta: The Abstinence Teacher

I thought the exact same thing. I'm about 100 pages in now and it's gradually getting more interesting, but for a few chapters there I thought I'd started Marian Keyes' latest novel.

    Richard Dawkins: The God Delusion

I just finished reading a critque of The God Delusion called The Dawkins Delusion by Alister McGrath. I was left constantly wondering if McGrath had indeed ever read TGD. Dawkins' points were continually taken out of context, and he often put forward arguments that had been pre-empted and...

What books have you read in 2008?

But increasing your comprehension has everything to do with the quality of what you are reading rather than the quantity. Reading 15, 007 pages of Dr Suess or Enid Blyton isn't going to do much to improve your understanding. I find what people are reading so much more interesting than how much...
