    Programming?

What does that mean? Sounds like something to be avoided. What's the FAQ section for if not for questions? Are you joking? Hard to tell without facial expressions, body language, or intonation - cues we all rely on. I guess the winking smiley face has to substitute so I'll assume your...

    Dispatches from the Edge

I want to recommed this book, written by Anderson Cooper. I've always admired him as a correspondant. Now that I've almost finished his book, my admiration for him has grown and grown. Even though he had the obvious advantage of being born into a family of tremendous wealth, he really made it...

medication - do you take any?

Maybe you can get by with just coffee and cigarettes, and some good old fashioned dope. I did for years. Ahhhh, the good old days. Still drink coffee though. They'll NEVER take THAT away from me!

    Programming?

I love programming, and after thinking about it for most of my adult life, I took an 18 month course at the Chubb Institute in 2000. I've done projects in: COBOL; C++; VB; Web design. Right now, I'm heavily into developing an ACCESS db with vba under it. My company (actually my brother's and...

medication - do you take any?

It's possible, in severe cases. Thank God mine isn't that bad. The effect of it is, my leg gets tired from walking only a short distance. If I stop and rest it recovers quickly though. It's distressing because I've always been a FAST walker. I'm short for a male (5'4") and have often had...

medication - do you take any?

WOw. I guess I should be happy I only have to control my cholesterol and blood pressure. Well, the "claudication" is vexing. That's the poor circulation in the leg. Bi-polar disorder and hemophilia are way out of my league. I hope you both (and all others) get well. Sounds so dumb, but...

medication - do you take any?

I bitterly resent the fact that I have to take daily: a blood pressure lowering pill; a cholesterol lowering pill; a pill to relieve poor circulation in my left leg; a multi-vitamin for the hell of it. My wife makes me take them. Makes me feel like an old fart. Guess I should get a...

buying books from amazon or anyother online bookstore?!!

No, it was an offer they had going on their site, where if you signed up for their card you would save like $30 on your first order. So I did. It's really a regular Chase Bank Visa Card - but it says amazon on it. I could really use it anywhere they accept visa cards, but I reserve this one...

buying books from amazon or anyother online bookstore?!!

The thing about the used books is that they are rediculously cheap. Like a dollar or two. You have to watch though, because these used books are supplied by third parties - in other words, NOT Amazon itself but other smaller companies who will then charge you shipping costs. So if you stick...

    raggedy edges

Oh, I see. The deckle, eh? In a NY Deli, the deckle is part of a cut of corned beef. I rather like the deckle (the book version). And now that you mention it, the paper texture is a bit different too. It's coarser, where as the clean cut edges ususally feature a glossier paper.

    raggedy edges

Why do many hardcover novels have pages with raggedy edges? I've noticed that non-fiction books, textbooks and reference books generally don't have the raggedy edges, and instead have clean cut pages. On the other hand, novels often do have the raggedy edges - but only hard cover books...

    Comic books vs. books

Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned Harvey Pekar and R. Crumb. Has anyone read American Splendor or seen the movie? Pekar writes the comics and R. Crumb (and other illustrators) do the artwork. Brilliant stuff. This is not kid's stuff by any stretch of the imagination.

    Activism

Nah. Whatever I said was probably bulldinky anyway. At least, that's what novella and shade said. That much I do remember.

    Activism

The only positive thing I can say about (nearly) all activists, is that they stand for something. They are - by definition - involved. At least they are not lulled into a robotic acceptance of the status quo. They put at least a little fear into the ruling class - the rich and powerful, who...

    Activism

Hitler absolutely WAS an activist. He started by speaking in beer halls. He was an untra conservative (big surprise). And the downtrodden masses, made even more miserable by their failure in WWI and their terrible economy, listened, as Hitler preached that it was the Jews and Foreigners that...

    Reading with noise

Can't do it. If a television is on - I can't read. Even if the sound is completely off, not just low. I read on the bus to and from work. Any conversation on the bus distracts me. I try to tune it out but I can't. I see people reading with an iPod or disc-man on their laps and headphones...

    Activism

I would agree - but with the stipulation that many do harm. There was a movement in the late 1930's and early 1940's in Europe to expell or exterminate all Jews and non-Arian races. That wasn't the thinking in the early 1930's. Activists - lead by Adolph Hitler - changed things. Somehow...

What type of issue would you like to see portrayed in a book?

Bookworm Beauty- Stewart is right about being careful about spelling and grammar. But don't let that paralyze you. Just go for it. Getting to your question, I like books with a theme that was often employed to great success by Hemingway: Grace Under Pressure. To me, that theme makes for a...

    Activism

One thing that comes to mind are religious zealots, who want to "save" you by converting you. They seem so sure that the only way to YOUR salvation is to follow THEIR faith. They stand to gain nothing personally, they only want to "help" you. They may be altruists, but, well, GOD save me from...
