I'm still around.
My belief is that people can do good things for others, but they are gaining some sort of positive reinforcement for their action. Infants are not altruists - positive reinforcement is how they learn to speak, after all. Not sure about the chimps - to be fair I've not read...
Mid-World has much in common with our world, Libra6Poe. Life in Mid-World is what you make it - just like in our world. There are no guarantees. Some people rise above others. I do realize that most of the power is concentrated in the male gender, although there are some powerful women there...
If you could, would you...
I'm just finishing up book 4. I'm speechless. I shouldn't say I'm finishing it yet - the climax is still building. I do think, though, that this book is an example of SUPERB writing.
I have a question. Would you want to live in Roland's world. Even though it has...

I wasn't talking about people helping people. Not at all. I was talking about several things but not that. I was talking about extremists and how they tend to dismiss the validity in the other side's position, and there always is some. One of my favorite sayings: "If you think...

Hudson River is a good example of your point - well taken. It's true there have been major improvements due to activism - the food industry is another.

you want me to name names?
Al Gore, while compaigning on a platform of environmentalism, had a zinc mine on his own...
I'm saying that most of these avid activists are self interested and narrow minded, not morally bankrupt.
Again, I'm generalizing, I admit it. Maybe that makes my point of view invalid at the get-go. There are some people that are truly altruistic, but they are very few in number and also...

I agree with much of what you wrote.
But...
I'm not talking about condemning slaugher and rape and inhuman acts. It's easy enough to condemn that stuff - as you said anyone with a heart would - and there is little I can do about it personally, except maybe send money. I'm talking about...
As a society, we are continually confronted by - bombarded is the word - by stong advocates - as well as opponants - of contoversial social policies.
Whether it is abortion, gay marriage, smoking in bars, capital punishment, illegal immigration ... WHATEVER, these "activists" want to advance...
I love a good game. It's true that some games are much better than some other games. That does not make gaming in general a waste of time. Some food is better than some other food.
There are the mindless shoot-em-ups, which may be fun for some people, but there are also games that are...
I'm halfway through The Dark Tower.
It's fabulous, if you're ready to make the commitment to a 7 book series.
It hasn't been all a bed of roses - I struggled through the first book (encouraged by fans here on TBF), gained momentum in the second book, loved the third book, and I'm also loving...
I totally agree. What's the difference between playing a game and listening to music, watching a movie, or looking at a painting? If anything, it is less passive in that it requires thinking and strategy to be sucessful.
If playing games is a waste of time, than so is everything except gardening.
I would not add any questions, if you are out to show that shorter books sell more copies than longer books. You may actually be asking too many - in differentiating between fiction and non-fiction. That additional variable actually makes your results harder to evaluate. If your results...
Even though it is for grade 12, I hope your course includes the following, because it is VITALLY important to the science of statistics.
Suppose your data indicates that shorter books tend to sell more copies.
Does this prove anything?
NO
To show that this data is meaningful, you must show...

For you to call my comparison "pathetic" shows that you are completely ignorant of the details of this inhumane practice - a practice that has no value other than appeasing religious fanatics.
I don't equate the two - female circumcision is worse - far worse. I have not said that they...
Doesn't sound like a statistics class to me. Sounds more like social science - sociology, poli-sci, that sort of thing.
Not doubting you - but - the science of statistics is much more concerned with analyzing, testing, and evaluating data than collecting it. Seems like a waste of time to me...
Well, that makes me feel much much better about having had the end of my dick hacked off as an infant.
Does anyone realize that men can be the victims of sexist attitudes - or is that an injustice strictly reserved for females?
Miss Shelf, can you explain exactly why the two can't be "lumped"...
If it carried out by "Christian and Muslim communities" --- or ANY relgious based communties --- it HAS to be bad.
I knew what it was right away.
But why stop there?
How many MALES worldwide have been circumsized? Whatever number you come up with, add 1 for me.
Why do we placidly accept...
I hadn't heard this. But, OK, let's say it's so (except the CRAP part).
Ever hear of Edgar Allen Poe?
You know Sigmond Freud was a tobacco addict?
Barry Bonds?
The list would be so long as to be nearly infinite, if we included everyone who has achieved greatness, while doing some form of...
