My perception is that the board has been in a steady downward spiral since before I even joined. Breakaway boards might have accelerated the process somewhat, but it was already happening.
If I had to put my finger on one reason, I'd probably go for a lack of direction and push from the...
I've mentioned a number of times before (in this thread and elsewhere) that My Dog Stupid is IMO his best story. Try getting hold of the Dago Red collection of shorts, which have been reprinted with some others as The Wine of Youth. A number of those stories may match up to what you are looking...
I don't wish to suggest your jokes are predictable, but there are as-of-yet undiscovered tribes in the heart of the Peruvian jungle, who knew you were going to say that.

Very little is translated into English.
The ones you've mentioned, plus a few others including 'Closey Observed Trains' which was made into a film, as have a number of others:

I don't know much about bluegrass, except a friend of mine likes it and plays us bits when we have a meal round his house.
John Fahey's music gets called bluegrass. But then it gets called blues, country, jazz, all sorts. To me it's just a soundtrack to relax too.
This is my favourite...
