Hi Everybody! My first post to the forum woo hoo! :)

Reginald Hill is very clever. I agree you need a dictionary. He must have what I think is known as a classical education. His Dalziel and Pascoe books are marvellous. Having watched and enjoyed the TV show immensely and it is easy to see the same people in the books. So far I have...

    David Baldacci

Since my last effort with this author I have been giving him a bit of a nudge, having finished The Collectors, which is a sort of sequel to the Camel Club, Absolute Power and most of Total Control, so far. Absolute Power is far and away the best I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book...

    Ian Rankin

I haven't read his short stories, but then I am not crazy about short stories in the first place. Ian Rankin is completely different to Agatha Christie, whose books I also enjoy immensely. Colin Dexter is probably closer to her than Ian Rankin. So if you are looking for someone like that he...

Could you recommend a poetry book?

Good Poems, edited by Garrison Keelor. Poems from all eras, and as the name suggests, all good. It is split into different themes. A marvellous book.

do you keep track of the books you read?

I keep a book of library books I borrow, mainly as I am reading so many books at once I don't finish that many, so I note where I am up to when I borrow it again. I also note if I have bought my own copy of the book, and when I finish a book. The only year I counted how many I read was...

Do you read in the toilet, and what reading material usually goes in there?

    Doesn't everyone? The newspaper.

How possessive are you about your books?

I am very possessive with my books. "Get yer paws off" is a phrase that springs to mind. I have been known to lend my books to family members on the odd rare occasion. It is hard to refuse. As for leaving the house, in someone else's possession, I don't know about that. Although I did...

Favorite 3 books of all time

This is indeed very difficult. I don't know if the top five thread will be any easier though. Having said that I don't think my top two will change, as they have been at the top of the list for many years, but third spot is very tricky.. 1. From Here to Eternity 2. The Sand Pebbles...

    James Jones

It's been a long time since this post, but I hope you are still around. From Here to Eternity is my favourite novel ever. A truly great book. Done no justice at all by the movie. The mini series in the late 70's did a good job of the book though. Unfortunately it has never come on the...

    Leon Uris

Trinity is a great book. Mila18, Armageddon and Battle Cry. Marvellous books. Easy to read, and very moving as well.

    John Le Carre

I also find them hard work. I will give him another go some day. There must be something there I think. Maybe I just need to try a bit harder.

    George Orwell

I read 1984 in 1984. I was running out of time, and always meant to read it by then. Animal Farm is a book everyone should read. Truly excellent. Also Road to Wigan Pier and Down and Out in Paris and London. A great writer.

    George MacDonald Fraser

Not yet. I keep meaning to give them a go. It is an interesting angle, given he was such a nasty specimen in Tom Brown's Schooldays.

    Eric Ambler

I read one years ago which was quite good, but I can't remember what it was called. I tried another and couldn't really get into it. Not much use unfortunately.. Nothing on Raymond Chandler, and nothing like him. I don't think anyone comes close to him.

    Howard Spring

I suppose he is almost forgotten now. I came across him through Fame is the Spur, after seeing the movie on the telly. An excellent novel. His books really are very good all round. I have most of his novels now, and look for the two or three others in second hand shops. Well worth a read.

    Ian Rankin

Keep going from Knots and Crosses. They get better. I think he really improves from Tooth and Nail, which was very fast paced. An excellent book. I feel his middle books up to The Falls are the best. I am just waiting for Exit Music to appear at the library. Last one to go and the...

    Sidney Sheldon

I read Bloodline and Other side of Midnight years ago. Good books. Thrillers. His later ones I think he got a bit carried away with the steamy bits.

    Agatha Christie

I think she is very good. I like both Poroit and Miss Marple, but can't get too excited about Tommy and Tuppence. My favourite would probably be the ABC Murders. Mystery of the Blue Train, 4.50 from Paddington..I rather like trains..are also enjoyable. Ten Little Niggers, though I...

    P.D. James

I think her middle period books are best. Murder Room, like Certain Justice certainly motor along. The earlier ones I found take a little more attention. I think she is a great writer. I saw her at a question and answer type event at a bookshop some years ago. Before she really hit the...

    Stephen Booth

I started one of his books, but not the first in the series, which as usual was not a good idea. Now I am reading Black Dog, which is quite good, and also as the first novel, makes a lot more sense all round. I really must try harder on starting at the beginning...
