***The 1st annual TBF Secret Santa***

Go to their previous posts and do a little research! I think that's part of the fun!! Hey SFG, can we have two seperate lists - one for virtual gifts and one for physical gifts? That way people can be comfortable and give to someone within their own category.

    School library

I know of one school that, during grade 7 and 8 (the first years of high school in Australia) runs a reading class once a week. Kids go to the library to borrow books and read for an hour. Students keep a tally of all the books they read throughout the year, which are signed off by the...

    Children's Book

Wow! Thanks Occlith! I never knew any of that. I have the original hardback at home - no dust jacket, unfortunately, but it's still in lovely condition otherwise. My mother and I pawed over it for a long time many years ago before this new fangled interweb came about to easily look such things...

Who likes The Sound of Music?

I love all musicals, really. Anyone seen 'Paint Your Wagon'?? Classic! :) "Doe a deer..." I miss Martin... :o

    Children's Book

*SUCH* a good book!!! I found this treasure at a book sale years ago. I never did figure out the ending, though.... Any idea what happened to the egg? I don't think I ever knew about the competition!

The Day After Tomorrow - doubt

Sorry, I wish I could be of help, but I haven't read it, nor do I know much about the author. Does the rest of the author's language raise the possibility that he may have actually said, "fitted like a condom"?

Guy Gavriel Kay - The Fionavar Tapestry

No no! That's my point! That was the point that I started *really* getting into it! From the closet scene on, really. Man, I gotta give this a re-read. It's in the post for my Dad's christmas present. I hope he's read it by the time I see him in January! :D

    Publish America: Making Books

That was pretty close, Occlith. I honestly can't recall the exact thread I was looking for BUT your links led me to the right place and I have now found exactly what I wanted. Here is an excellent link regarding a number of different publishers and people's experiences with them from Absolute...

    Publish America: Making Books

Somewhere here I recall seeing a thread that included a link to a website which listed a number of 'publishers' to be wary of. I've tried to find it, but to no avail. Does anyone remember? I think it would be a valuable addition to this thread. Edit: I think this was what I was thinking of -...

    Great Walls of America

Nor do I, in fact boundary demarcation is part of my profession. My point, though, is "before I built a wall I'd ask to know what I was walling in or walling out, and to whom I was like to give offence." What sort of message does this send? I think it's incredibly unwelcoming and not the sort of...

Suggestions: February 2006 Book of the Month

Seconded! This is on my TBR and I'm really excited about it :).

What book do you hate but everybody else loves?

I thought of another one - Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. Man, I just couldn't get into this one at all! I loved the premise and the language, but the flow of the book just bored me to tears. I'll give it another whirl next time I'm withint stealing distance of my mother's bookshelf, but I...

    INXS-- New CD

But at least they can sing better!! :D Maybe we should develop a proposal for Fox or something.

Guy Gavriel Kay - The Fionavar Tapestry

ions - TIGANA, TIGANA, TIGANA!!! It took me 3 chapters to become immersed in this book, likely because I was right into the Fionavar Tapestry from the get-go. So give it a chance. By the time you get out to the events at the hunting shack in the woods it really picks up the pace :)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - Discussion *Spoiler Alert*

That's my suspicion. It seems a little odd to name the entire book after this plot devise and then for it not to go anywhere.

Guy Gavriel Kay - The Fionavar Tapestry

I guess I didn't think they looked enough like a tapestry to pull it off. Now, if it had been the picture of an actual tapestry with a scene reminiscent of the book on the cover - maybe a black background with a tapestry fragment on top - that'd be cool.

Be careful what you write - especially in school

I more meant that such a grotesque crime would be unusual whereas a school shooting would (unfortunately) not be. I think people would be more willing to accept that there was a real risk with the latter. A shame. I agree that reading these passages would scare the hell out of me if it were...

    Question Game

It usually happens, though it's very mild this year, so there's a reduced chance. It'd be a nice thing, but I'm happy either way. We get so much snow in January and February around here that I'm content for the weather to stay mild a little longer. It's probably because I'm not traditionally...
