It was a class selection in my Grade 11 literature class. I wanted Titus Groan, but the majority voted for 1984. Democracy - bah! I was pleasantly surprised by it, though, and I think I got a lot more out of it education-wise than I would have with Titus Groan.
I went into my local Chapters (Canadian book chain) the other day and was helping a friend look for some christmas presents for her niece. I asked if her niece had read The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. My friend had never heard of Blyton! I stared at her and then went to the 'Classic...
Indeed. I actually have last week's Smackdown on tape, although it's not quite as emotional as Raw (which screens first here and as such they recorded a lot more interviews with the wrestlers on it), it still has some nice retrospective about him. I could send it to you if you're really...
Ah, okay. I wasn't thinking of that definition of purse! Good point - that should have been included, I guess. I think the movies aren't designed to flow like the books, which is a shame (see my comment above regarding Snape), but inevitable when they are coming out before the books are completed.
I'm not a fan of Pretty Vegas at all. It sounds dreary to me. That being said I do hope the band has success (ahem... see my location above?). Given that Fortune is a song-writer I think that's a plus. I think the second album will be the telling factor after the hype from this...
I've read the top two - Nineteen Eighty Four and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I find the list is a little biased towards sci-fi, personally. There's a lot of fantasy-genre stuff that would definately qualify in my opinion (LOTR isn't pre-1932, I'm fairly sure. The 50th anniversary was...
I totally agree!! I thought the last one tried to do more character development, but at the expense of a lot of plot, and for that reason I came away disappointed.
Purse... sorry, I can't recall what you're talking about! As I said, I read the book when it first came out and not since. But...
The results of Eddie's autopsy revealed that he had the beginnings of heart disease. Basically the drug and alcohol abuse he had been indulging in years ago had ruined his organs. This was no secret at all, though. What's also no secret is that he had just celebrated 4 years of being clean and...
I saw the movie last night and was really happy with it. I must say, though, that I haven't read the book since it first came out, so some of the things that were obviously left out may not have been so obvious to me.
The ending was sufficiently sad, I felt, although I don't think the...
I really like Alistair McLeod, although he's an east coast writer, particularly Cape Breton. I believe some of his work goes further afield, though. 'The Lost Salt Gift of Blood' was a really nice collection of short stories.
I read his book 'The Joy of Writing', and it was really interesting...
I think the first response to any student should be, "Please note that TBF is not a homework-help forum. Read this thread and explore the resources within to seek help with your work. TBF members are happy to discuss books with you, but that means that you must contribute to the discussion as...
Great post, ions. This is the sort of information that students need, and hopefully will reduce the number who do not understand that members of this forum are opposed to the concept of doing their homework for them. I do enjoy discussing books with students but I'm always very cautious of how...
I'm not sure. My local paper back home prints 'false' ads in the paper as part of a competition each week. They're usually fairly amusing. I assumed these were along the same lines.
Try David Eddings' Belgariad series. The first book (of five) is Pawn of Prophecy. Really fun fantasy series, lots of adventure, and the language and style are very straight forward. Each book is also fairly short and so you won't get bogged down and will feel like you're getting somewhere.
I...
Sophna is just asking for a title, not for an answer to her essay question. I'm sure she could just pick one up and start reading it, but if she can get a recommendation for which one would best suit her purposes, that would be great. I highly doubt that all these books are on her reading list...
