    Books and CD prices

Ahem. There are cheap and expensive books and CDs - ever looked in the discount bins? Sure, they're not the newest releases nor the best quality, but neither is the 1992 Civic you have to buy because you can't afford a BMW. Or you can troll through the used book store and Thrift shop (similar to...

    Nevil Shute: On The Beach

Looking back through this old thread and I guess I missed Lenny's post the first time around. I just checked, and the miniseries is available through Amazon (here). I guess they just released it this year. It's the Bryan Brown version, in case you were wondering - IMDB summary.

    Edward Rutherfurd

Your library *charges* for books?!?!? I don't think that fits with the definition of 'library', does it? Sounds more like 'Book Rental' to me.

What are you listening to Right now?

This is my boyfriend's kareoke song... hilarious!

    Why do boys hate reading?

Is it sexist to target just boys, though? It may work, but what about girls who also want the opportunity to get together and read books that *they* enjoy? Personally I'd feel it was a little unfair if I was back in primary school and knew all the boys were going to get to go to such an event.

    Why do boys hate reading?

So, can we move on from the "do boys read less than girls" debate and start discussing solutions to the problem? If you still think that boys read about the same or even more than girls then perhaps you can frame the general question as "how can we get all kids to read more?". Any ideas?

    Why do boys hate reading?

I agree with this in a way. Growing up my brother was not a reader, but he did read comics, and my house was full of them. My mother (a librarian) believed that any reading was good reading. He's since become a journalist, so maybe there's something in the concept that reading *anything* helps...

What are you listening to Right now?

"Oh where is my hairbrush..." The only Veggie Tales song I ever heard, and I sing this regularly when it is required. :D

    Holiday Plans and Preparations

My 4th christmas away in 5 years. Last year I was home for the first time since 2000, and it was great. Unfortunately I couldn't get the thesis done in time to head home for christmas, but I'll be back for Australia Day (Jan 26th). I was trying to get all my gifts bought in time to ship them...

Weather-how much attention do you pay to it?

When I'm here in Canada I pay *a lot* of attention. In the summer I always check the humidex in the morning because it's usually ridiculous where I am. Then around this time of year I'm checking to see whether it's likely to freeze so I can determine if it's bike riding weather or not. In winter...

    Why do boys hate reading?

Okay, stop the bickering, both Moto and RFK. RFK - if you want some specific questions answered I'd suggest putting them in the one post. It was a little hard to follow your train of thought given it was spread over 15 or so posts. Oh, and by the way: When I got to this post of yours I lost a...

    Why do boys hate reading?

I think this is a big part of it. So what books *would* be suitable for boys? The year 12 syllabus for next year in my home state of Victoria has just added two new options (teachers choose ~4 of some 30 on the list for their class and all exams and assignments are state-centralised)...

    Find something new to read

This kind of reminds me of Pandora, otherwise known as the Music Genome Project. It's a pretty cool concept, but I think that I'm with the others when I say that I'll find mine the usual way :).

The Most overrated fiction book ever?

No, no no!! In fact I'm adding a 'HELL NO!' to CDA's current objection. I adored this book!!

    Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

Yeah, I like the black and white saddle shoe shot too. It looks so innocent, and yet since Lolita is anonymous it adds to the mystique about her. I'm hoping to get to the library soon and borrow Lolita for my first reading of it, but if I end up buying a copy it will surely be this one. We...

    Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

I'm pretty sure PG is after this one: Which one are you talking about, Still? This one?

    The Wiggles......why?

That's right - see here. Anthony Field (blue wiggle) was also the Cleo Bachelor of the Year a few years back, but I think he's since married.

    Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

According to this eBay item, the ISBN is 0679723161. A lot of people seem to use this book image, but are actually talking about a different version.

    Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

According to this website. The ISBN is 0882335359. But I'd want to double check that.
