    The Worst of 2005

I didn't read anything in 2005 that I truly hated. There were a few things I didn't finish, but I think that was more to do with mood and distraction: Snow Falling on Cedars was one, and the other was a book by Isabelle Allende. I plan to try them both again, though. Oh, and I once again glanced...

Does anyone know the book "Red Dwarf" by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor?

Red Dwarf was an awesome show - I highly recommend finding the DVDs or videos of the show. There are some other books based on the show, as well which might be on audio. If you're looking for other audio, I'd recommend the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and other books by Douglas Adams...

    Name That Tune

Adding a little more info (missing 3 words are the title): "I wear my ________ ___ ______ So I can so I can Watch you weave then breathe your story lines And I wear my ________ ___ ______ So I can so I can Keep track of the visions in my eyes".

Most important part of a story?

I just can't separate them. Setting is probably the least important - if the plot and characters are interesting then the setting just happens to be where they take place. That being said, any setting in outer space is unlikely to interest me, because any plot in outer space is usually not...

Suggestions: March 2006 Book of the Month

Just adding some more info... So first everyone makes suggestions about what they'd like to be the BOTM for two months hence (this thread). You can nominate a book or second one that's already nominated. After one month of suggestions, a maximum of ten books are selected from this thread (if...

One of those 'Holy Grail' quests'

You can use spoiler tags to cover up anything that is giving away too much. That way if someone wants to read the book they can choose not to read the spoilers. To do a spoiler, you just type . Spoilers are read by highlighting the blacked out passages.

    Name That Tune

Okay - it's from the 1980's, and is very much an '80s tune. It's an American song, but was an international hit. Here's another passage of lyrics. The blanked out passages are actually the title of the song: "____________________________ So I can so I can Watch you weave then breathe your...

    Give me some advice!

Despite my frugal money-minding Scottish heritage, this one rings true for me: "It's only money."

    Hi

I've been reading it for a while and am just over half way now. I found it difficult to get into, largely because the style is different (with the footnotes, etc) and the pacing is slower than what I usually expect for a fantasy-genre book. It's great for a relaxing afternoon read, though. I...

    crabs the newbie

Welcome crab3 :) . Sorry, there's something about 'crabs' which is... a little offputting.

Colour me biased - Australia. I lived in Scotland for a summer, and the constant rain got me down. Beautiful place to visit, though :o . If you could change any habit you current have, what would it be?

    Question Game

Man, that's a tough one. They are two activities that I don't do together at all! Reading is what I enjoy when I want to be doing something peaceful, whereas I love to listen to music while I engage in some other activity. So they're mutually exclusive for me. Sorry, I so piked on this question...

    Books Librarians MUST Read

My library has these great lists of 'If you liked ______, try ______'. If I were working at a library I'd start compiling these sorts of lists, drawing from the popular/new books and coming up with other books that are similar. So if someone comes up to you and asks for a recommendation you can...

is terry brooks ,or isaac asimov any good?

So you reckon his later work is better? I do feel a little judgemental of him because as I said I only read 'Sword of Shannara'. It just left me so disappointed at the lack of originality. That being said, he may have improved over time, and I'd hate to sell him short. Any recommendations of a...
