why did you join the book forum?

Maybe as a plea to others to take it more seriously, and limit their off-topic stuff to the general chat area??

    How often do you read?

I read all the time, whenever I have the chance. Every day I will read through my lunch hour. As soon as I get home I will start reading and, barring while I eat my evening meal, I usually continue til I go to bed. At weekends, if I have a day free, I can easily spend the whole day...

why did you join the book forum?

I joined to discuss books and as a way to pass time during slower periods at work. I love chatting about books, and sharing recommendations etc. However, I don't love the way that you can post something serious and go back to check the thread and find it's been derailed by people talking...

    Recommend 1 COMPLETED fantasy series

It isn't the same. The new book out focuses very much on Tony as the main character. Henry Fitzroy appears in the book, but I don't believe there is any Vicki or Mike. To me, this is entirely different than the Blood series, since the love triangle in that positively made those books.

George R. R. Martin: A Song Of Ice And Fire

So far I think he's managed to avoid that. I found the third book as thrilling and epic as the first, if not more so. Since he's already put a cap on the books he intends to write and truly believes he can fit the rest of the plot into those remaining two books, I don't think it'll be another RJ.

    Recommend 1 COMPLETED fantasy series

Hmmm, David Eddings currently has four completed series - the Belgariad, the Mallorean, the Elenium and the Tamuli. Start with either the Belgariad or the Elenium (equally good, IMO).

What's wrong with the public library?

My local library would be my constant weekend haunt as a teenager because there was no way I could afford to buy my own. But now that I can afford to buy books brand new, it's become a bit of an obsession. I love bringing home a haul of books from a bookstore and lovingly cataloguing them in my...

Plagiarism vs. influence vs. parameters of a common subject

I've experienced this problem while writing - usually during my ideas shakedown before kicking off with the actual writing. I will look again at an idea I produced during a brainstorm and think that it looks familiar, then realise that this is so because I've read that very same plot development...

    Book suggestions?

I would suggest both River God and The Seventh Scroll by Wilbur Smith - cracking adventure stories set around Egypt.

    The Black Magician Trilogy

I've read all three of them and quite enjoyed them. They weren't anything like my all time favourites, but they were a nice diversionary read. I happen to believe that the third was the best book of the three, simply because Trudi Canavan did not shy away from the deaths of characters. For me...

    remember your first chapter book?

Mine would be an Enid Blyton book - Shadow the Sheepdog. I still love this book and will read it nostalgically now and then.

    Any suggestions?

Looking at your examples of Jane Green and Meg Cabot, I would suggest any of the following authors: Cathy Kelly Fiona Walker Freya North Maeve Binchy Lisa Jewell Marian Keyes That should get you started. All of them are by women and principally for women (you know that, because the...

    Fantasy book suggestions?

How about nipping down to the actual sci fi and fantasy forum, where a number of threads along these lines have already been posted? You should be able to find all manner of suggestions and reasons for why you should read that book. Cheers.

    The Sword of Thruth

*blush* :o Sorry, I never heard about that error. I thought you were questioning my astonishing knowledge of fantasy books :p

    The Sword of Thruth

The following is what is posted on amazon.com.... Do you not think they would also have made mention of the fact that copyright was RJ? Do you have the book right there? Can you actually see as you type that it is copyright RJ? From Publishers Weekly Terry Goodkind (Faith of the Fallen)...

    Suggestions: February 2005

I nominate Legend by David Gemmell - classic heroic fantasy with dominant themes of good and evil, but also acknowledging that all people are truly made up of shades of grey.

    The Sword of Thruth

I'm afraid I'm busy at work so can't just toddle off to retrieve my copy of Debt of Bones. However, since Debt of Bones belongs in Terry Goodkind's series The Sword of Truth, why on earth would Robert Jordan have written it, since he is the sterling author of the Wheel of Time?

    The Sword of Thruth

No, you're wrong Prolixic. Terry Goodkind wrote Debt of Bones as part of his Sword of Truth series. Robert Jordan wrote New Spring as a prequel to his Wheel of Time series.

    The Sword of Thruth

Just in case you didn't know, the first one is Wizard's First Rule. I liked the first three well enough - some nice ideas and entertaining characters. But then it just got a bit tedious. I wish authors knew when to cut their losses and run with a series. We currently have both Terry Goodkind...

No, no insult - you'd know if I had intended to insult you ;)
