Do you play a musical instrument?

piano, flute, piccolo and I love the comment about shooting one piccolo player! Back in the olden days, I wore overalls or painters jeans and the little side pocket was just perfect for carrying my piccolo to and from the field for marching practice. Best piccolo song in the world, imho, is...

    Hillary Clinton

Oh goodness, claybugg, we need to get you out of them thar hills and into civilization. With all due respect, what causes you to believe that a black man has no chance at the presidency? I am simply staggered to read this.

    Kazuo Ishiguro

Ions, indecision towards Remains of the Day??? I feel faint! Please read this and I promise you will not be disappointed. It is not Perfume. Ell is right that it is superior to Never Let Me Go.

    In a reading rut?

Yes, yes, yes, I understand this so well, Stewart. Dark nights into dark mornings creates a foggy, somnolent state that some days it's hard to snap from. I read every day but at this time of year everything....takes....so....long....to.....finish. I probably need to buy a halogen lamp or...

    Other choices...(bit of a rant)

So do you get to vote at a polling place like we do? And do you have to endure lots of badly produced commercials for the issues and candidates? From your Wiki link: "There is some evidence that many Scottish voters did not understand the implications of the system, and that...

When Is It Okay To Commit Suicide?

Way late to this discussion but I believe that suicide is never the right choice. Ever. There are too many people, Eyez, who suffer greatly, wondering why someone they loved made this choice. The ripple effect is tremendous.

    Biscuits, that's right Biscuits

Very good, Jughead, and the domestic dialogue zings!

Philip Roth: I Married A Communist

Great review, Heteronym. I'm also a Roth fan, mostly for the humor. But I've taken a break from him for a couple of years. Time to find another good one for springtime. I think it will be Pastoral, and I'm hoping that Nathan's as tragically funny as when he was young. Love your observation here...

    What's Your Purpose In Life?

    AquaBlue, those are funny!

    Henry James

Heteronym, thank you for helping me to understand this novella. I didn't place the story in the context of "a world about to disappear." This makes so much sense and gives me something very substantial to think on. I think James may have been making societal observations. But where he grips me...

    Kazuo Ishiguro

MC you've made a great point, one I never considered until now. And I suppose it is possible, faulty as he is, that Ishiguro could have written Stevens in such a manner as to entirely occlude what was really going on between Miss Kenton and himself. But I don't believe that Ishiguro did this, ...

What's the Most You Paid for a Single Book?

Shakespeare here too jaynebosco. I paid over $100 for the Riverside several years ago. It's a gorgeous volume and the sheets are wispy thin and make a satisfying noise as they turn. But I'm thinking that the notes and references are what make it special and pricey.

Franz Kafka: The Metamorphosis and other Stories

My edition is different, but will read Metamorphosis at least. Hopefully not too off topic, but Heteronym, I would enjoy reading your analysis of The Aspern Papers on the James thread at some point. I'm not in a reading rut, but possibly another slump where I can't seem to finish anything in a...

Do You Have Good Or Bad Feng Shui?

"You have fabulous feng shui You are on the right feng shui track, and I'm sure you are seeing the benefits. You probably have respect and a decent job. Your love life is probably not so bad either. Stay diligent about keeping the clutter away, keeping the functions of the rooms...

    Slavery

March by Geraldine Brooks has an interesting relationship between a slave and his owner. Also between a slave and the narrator. There's a bit of a twist to each relationship and the outcomes are not what one might expect. Won the Pulitzer this year.

    Hillary Clinton

I like Beer Good's answer. Heavens to mergatroid, we have got to put someone in there who can form a complete thought and express it. What do you think SFG? Is she strong enough to carry the Dems into the WH? Better yet, what does she read? What are her philosophical underpinnings? Obama, for my...

    Kazuo Ishiguro

Hmm, very interesting comment, Heteronym. Considering Stevens' and Miss Kenton's long history of pleasant teas and, for them, conversations that were intimate on a scale of sorts, and I'm wondering if he was concocting anything or rather, refusing to recognize?? Edit: Sorry for the months...
