Atheist, though one of my favorite places long ago used to be amongst all of the people in church. The sun coming through stained glass, the music, fragrant and clean people in beautiful clothes, children, community... What's not to like? But I never did believe all the hocus pocus and magical...
Thank you very much AB. That's been a mystery for some time now. I promise to use the new powers judiciously of course. Like next time I buy a book? :p
Nice cover,AB. Off thread somewhat but how do you get a photo of a cover to post in a thread as you have done? Is it complicated? Very limited tech skills here.
Yes, I can see a theme, though very subtle, that takes a bit of a swipe at Western cultures of plenty, not just American. As for the idea of what America is....well, that's where I think parts of the world get it wrong. Yes, we'll sell anything, etc etc, but at the core America is still a place...
oh my bookworm27. That is a reaction if I've ever seen one! Such a shame that it was presented to you as a gothic novel and not a gentle feminist classic. Heroines dont' need to breathe fire or wave wands in order to be magical. ;) Let's see....I hated Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler. Mundane...
Fear of Flying by Erica Jong
Oh just worked for an hour posting a review of this and lost it when I went to preview. Ugh, it's too late to rethink, but Jennifer, can you tell me why you think FOF is such an important work? Maybe our discussion will work better this way, without a review...
My favorite Faulkner so far is one called The Town or The Village, can't remember exactly. It's the first book to introduce the Snopes family and the whole map of Yoknapatawpha County is on the inside cover. I've read As I Lay Dying and Absalom, Absalom but it's been so long I can't answer your...
I think you'll find that authenticity, SFG. I know what you mean about a certain genuine quality that some writers have. And all the MFA in the world can't buy it. Do you think it always springs from a deficit of one thing or another? I'm just not convinced that there necessarily has to be one...
Curious about your thoughts on western culture related to the novel. I found it to be almost hands off in how deftly he reveals the story without indicting any partiular element of cause. What element/s of culture do you feel he treated with vitriol?
I will read it again, definitely, but not...
That's exactly what I took from it as well. I'll just have to read his others. Someone cautioned me before reading The Road about the violence and dark themes McCarthy weaves. Certainly that's all there, but I found his writing starkly beautiful, like looking upon a massive old tree that stands...
That does sound really nice, FM. I was just imaging fancy books this morning in conjunction with another discussion and wondering if rich fabrics are ever used to create book covers. Library of America editions each come in a case and they are jewel colored. The paper is acid free, very thin and...
SFG it will be interesting to hear what you think of this novel. Jughead, I truly appreciate your assessment. Can you imagine the intellectual build up that it would take to express such grand thoughts in such compelling fashion? I'd love to hear McCarthy interviewed and probed on this. Better...
Should have been more specific about what I meant by higher level thinking. Miller especially refers to art, music, literature, as the human equivalent to the peacock's tail. Not all humans have those fitness indicators, sadly. The ones, especially males, who display these qualities will be more...
