Books you would NOT SUGGEST to your kids. Why? At what age would you recommend it?

This is how my childhood was, too. However, once I got to middle school and started picking out my own books in the school's library, I tended to find books that my parents may not have agreed with.

Never Ending Song Titles:Words in Common

    Heart-Shaped Box - Nirvana

    Fyodor Dostoevsky

That's amazing that you can read it in Russian. I have often felt barriers myself in translated copies, and I wonder how much has been lost.

What are you listening to Right now?

Seether - I know, I know. I usually don't enjoy newer bands, especially rock bands, but when they aren't screaming, like in the song Rise Above This, I find them to be very good.

    Vicky Cristina Barcelona, anyone?

I just went to see this movie last night, and found it incredible! I haven't been too impressed by Woody Allen's films (Match Point and Scoop were...interesting), but I certainly agree with the reviews from when it premiered at Cannes - he seemed lost in London, but in Barcelona, he shines...

    Strindberg fans?

Thanks for replying! I just read Half a Sheet of Foolscap and I found it to be much more enjoyable than The Father, despite it's short length. I love this line: "It was a slice of a human life on half a sheet of foolscap."

Books you would NOT SUGGEST to your kids. Why? At what age would you recommend it?

This is an interesting topic. I'm glad to see that most people are simply taking an interest in their reading, and not considerably censoring anything with the word "damn" in it. I read a lot of books as a kid, and at the top of my head, I remember glancing through a lot of my mother's...

Teaching Christianity in the Public Schools...

That certainly is shocking - you mean he taught it as fact, or told them it was what he believed? Having just graduated from high school, I wouldn't mind being taught Christianity (I'm not a religious person at all) - but only in the sense of it being part of history, and only if we learned...

    Question Game

Er, Luke Skywalker only because I know nothing about Star Wars! Is it better to see a film in theaters or watch it at home?

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

The Life of Charlotte Bronte sounds really interesting. You'll have to tell me how it is :) As for me, I just bought another copy of The Brothers Karamazov - the state mine was in was almost shameful.

    Mr. Darcy or Rhett Butler????

So wait, we're talking about Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudie, and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind? Unfortunately I haven't read Gone with the Wind, but I did enjoy Pride and Prejudice. While I can't say for certain I like Mr. Darcy more, I did enjoy his character. Gasp! I found Mr...

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

I just got a good haul for less than 20 dollars: Sophie's World, To Kill a Mockingbird, Notes from Underground, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The First Circle, Crime and Punishment...I know there is something else, but I forgot :P

A Book Named The Number 23 Changed HIS Life

I heard this movie was really awful, but I haven't seen it. Any reason why you guys like it? Is it worth renting?

    Strindberg fans?

I just bought a book of his plays, and I've only read one of them - The Father. I found it to be interesting, but upon talking to my theater friend discovered it was meant to be an outcry against women ("He basically hated women at this point"). Anyone else know about Strindberg? Like him...

    Extreme Ways - Moby.

Could you recommend a poetry book?

I've checked these out from the library a couple of times - The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry. I think its excellent - it covers such a wide variety of poets.

    Sylvia Plath

The movie I thought was excellent. I read the Bell Jar before I saw the film, but Paltrow I think did a superb job at playing Plath. I find her poetry to be a bit confusing (okay, extremely confusing), and like someone else said, I hope everytime I'm taking some sort of test that her poetry...

which poem/poems left a permanent impression on you?

Louise Gluck's Mock Orange Frank Bidart's Ellen Page Oliver Goldsmith's Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog Christina Rossetti's Symbols (Is thy wrath just? And what if God, Who waiteth for thy fruits in vain, Should also take the rod?) Good stuff - and great thread too, I need some good poetry...

    Fyodor Dostoevsky

Me too. I had to check it out from the library because for some reason, my Dostoevsky copies always have tissue-thin paper and a miniscule font. Here's an interesting website on pronunciation.

    Watchmen trailer

I got to the library too late - The Watchmen is on hold for ages...perhaps I'll cave and buy it? The trailer makes it look absolutley superb. But...I'll try not to have any expecations - I usually find superhero movies to be very disappointing.
