    Sci-fi A-Z

Fahrenheit 451 -- Ray Bradbury Whoa...political book regarding censorship. Books are outlawed and TV rules supreme. One man--a fireman--actually begins to think...and it just goes to heck after that. Ita a classic, excellent read.

    Robert Jordan - New Spring

I remember the first time I saw Jordan at a Waldenbooks. I passed him over and kept on doing it until about a month ago. I was desperate, what can I say? So I read Eye of the World and bought The Great Hunt wondering what in the world have I got myself into here. Query: Should I read New...

    Battletech books. Any good?

I remember reading a few when I was in high school--don't even ask me how long ago that was--and thinking at the time that they were the paper equivalent of a mildly sci-fi soap opera. I think they're based on an anime series so it figures. So in answer to your question--no.

    Invented Words

In regard to the peashooter thing it depends on the character. If its a habit of the character to create new words or uses for words then its OK--to me, whatever thats worth. I've seen the narrator get away with it but the writer has to make sure that the words are explained as to their...

U as in 'Um I can't think of anything that starts with U other than Unicorn...Hmmm, theres a Unicorn in the Amber series... "It bore a white unicorn on a green field, rampant, facing the dexter. And I knew that device and it hurt me that I could not name it." --Corwin, Nine Princes in Amber...

The Return Of The King **Spoilers**

Elves, men and Dwarves all 'woke up' in Middle Earth, though the elves were first. Elves went to Valinor to escape Melkor--to whom Sauron was but a boot licking lackey--originally, then some returned to Middle Earth with Feanor to regain the Silmarillion. Battles and sundry other adventures...

I recently picked up Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series (Seven or eight dauntingly thick volumes) and found it very engaging. (The last two books sort of dragged on a bit, but they were still good uns.) I like the way he puts his characters together. They seem to act like real people...

    Pseudonyms

I think its a necessary optimism. I.e., IF you get published AND the book sells a jillion copies you don't want hordes of fans flocking to your private writing spot bugging the spit out of you THEREFORE, you need a pseudonym.

    Capitals

Well, when I think about the books I've read its the context that gives the major clues about volume. For exaple, if two characters are conversing during a mortar barrage or they're in a wind tunnel, or they hurtling through the outer atmosphere about to burn up then you'd expect them to be...

Orion--Ben Bova Prince of Chaos--Roger Zelazny (Had to add that one)

General comparison of Tolkien vs Jordan

Been awhile but I HAD to bite on this one. First: Pick a hard fantasy series, I.e. Sword of Truth (Terry Goodkind), Shanarra (Terry Brooks), LOTR, Wheel of Time (Jordan)...Normal individual finds, inherits, or otherwise acquires magical sword (usually) or other object. Changes and/or saves...

    incest novels

True. I guess I didn't think about it that way. In spite of the original post in the thread it doesn't appear to be one of those topics--to me anyway--that you can be neutral about. Ah well...

    The English Common Reader

If its imporatant to you, ask a librarian. I think they have whole undergraduate classes on that sort of thing.

For some reason I remember reading the first few chapters of that one then stopping. Can't, however, remember why.
