I'm speechless, which isn't an everyday event.

    Another Newbie

Nope, the standard around here seems to be no such thing as a silly question. Good discussion and occasionally polite disagreements--especially when exploring themes and ideas presented by authors in, ta-da! Books. (If you want rude try attending the Day After Thanksgiving Sale at Wal-Mart...

What do you use as a bookmark?

Tried that once Feanor, and I'll tell you what...you'd be surprised at how far a two year old can flip a book thats been left open like that. Now its a bookmark and a rubberband if I leave it out. Everything else is behind the endtables.

    Children's Books

Well, doesn't look like there are too many frequent readers of the Children's book genre. Tell you what, if you've had a bad week or if you're feeling cynical about the world or if you're just in a funk, go find a toddler around two or three who has had a nap and lunch and is generally in a...

    Favorite Quotes

You mean like, "You're a jerk Dent. A complete kneebiter," thats one of my favorites. Or, "So this is it then, we're going to die." And who could forget, "..." Douglas Adams got me through some rough times by making me laugh untill I forgot what the trouble was.

I checked out that link and I am at least interested. Don't sign me up yet but the books sound intriguing, so hey, you never know.

    Astronomy Books

Can anyone offer a suggestion for a good basic astronomy book? I've got a pretty good one but it seems to be top heavy with equations--which is fine...I just love equations! ;) Anyway, I thought I would like to have one around for my kids and I to use. Suggestions?

What other hobbies do you enjoy?

The most efficient time dissolving substance known to man--children. In spite of that they are most definitely worth the effort, the wrinkles, gray hairs, and the 10pm, Midnight, 2am, and 4am diaper changes and feedings. Congratulations Holger! Especially if you're conscious enough to read...

    What is a good....

Fictional Fantasy...Hmmm. I still enjoy reading The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis from time to time (No space there.) This Immortal by Roger Zelazny is a good one too (a lot of his stuff is). Some people enjoy the Xanth Series by Piers Anthony although you might take a break after...

    Difficult books.

I think the Silmarillion is tough because its written historically and around the plot of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. So unless you're very familiar it probably is a load of tedious bilge, i.e., it was pumped up with great effort from the very bottom of the area of Tolkeins mind that dealt...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

As funes pointed out Tolkein wasn't at all interested in having his work seen as an allegory to WWII but...is there anyone besides me who thinks the Shire sounds a lot like England sounds? Perhaps thats it: I've never set foot in either one of them and so what I know about them is from what...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

Dawn wrote: Yup. But don't worry, you're in good company. The world would be kinda boring without sap's to read books...and write them. P.S. For example, most fiction books have little romance in them. Even Tolkein sprinkled a bit through LOTR, i.e., Arwen and Aragorn (true love...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

Well I think funes just blew that one out of the water. Good shootin' Tex! Anyway, I agree with you about the sad part. Its even sadder because unlike Adam and Eve, the Elves, Gandalf were leaving because of what they were not because of what they did--I mean it wasn't punishment. Although...

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord Of The Rings

I got the impression that there its the place that the elves go when they get weary with Middle Earth or get done with what they need to do. They don't die unless they are killed by something--immortal I guess is what they are, so they have to sail there. I think the Return of the King has a...

    Spiderman (2002)

Just saw the movie and have to say they did a good job. I am operating on dusty Spiderman comic memories, but I think Tobey McGuire even sort of looks like Peter Parker did. The same for Kirsten Dunst and Mary Jane. Even had some good moral lessons and all that stuff you don't expect to see...
