    Anton Chekhov: The Bet

PS. About the capitol punishment. The lawyer chose a hard and penniless life over death.

    Anton Chekhov: The Bet

I love this story. Though I appear to have a different understanding of it than most. To me it means that life is worthless. Knowledge teaches us nothing real, except the realization of how useless and harmful we all are - rich or poor. The banker was self obsessed and greedy enough to...

What's wrong with Dustin Hoffman? I didn't see him mentioned. Also - Al Pacino - Robert DeNiro and loads of 'em.

    Today I'm Happy because....

What a miserable bunch of readers we must have here! The moaning thread has loads more posts; what is it with you all? I'm happy today because I saw two drivers pulled over for speeding. I saw loads of folk get drenched in a sudden downpour while I was cozy in my car, and best of all Family...

Willa Cather: A Death In The Desert

I read it - well most of it, I had to skip all those long descriptions, yawn. It did nothing for me. It appeared to do nothing for the main characters either.

    biographies about bands/band members

'I'm with the Band' by Pamela de Barres(confessions of a groupie) is a great read if you can get hold of a copy, Amazon usually has it. Probably better for older readers as it's mostly sixties/seventies bands. She had Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Kieth Moon, Jim Morrison, Don Johnson (I'm...

    [ Old Movies ]

All I can say, is why have none of you said Midnight Cowboy? You can't have seen it, that's all I can think. It's hillarariously funny, gut-wrenchingly sad and has some brilliant music 'Everybody's Talkin' is just one of great tracks. Come on, it won twelve Oscars!

Jon McGregor: If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things

It is so good, I've had to stop myself from finishing it. I'm almost at the end. Every word is perfect and beautiful. Every character is real and lovable. You live in that northern street, watching it all unfurl. I'm off to read the end now.

    American accents in films (movies)

Perhaps they make the sound inaudible on purpose. So we can't hear the rubbish they are talking. Thus saving money on decent script writers.

    American accents in films (movies)

I can only think of an utterly dreadful film I watched the other night. 'Identity.' Couldn't understand the lead actress ( Amanda Peet?) but John Cusack and the rest were fine. Most of the time I switch them off.

    American accents in films (movies)

I can follow Family Guy easily. South Park I had to give up trying.

    American accents in films (movies)

I find it impossible to understand some actors in American films these days. I need sub-titles. I'd say the younger ones are the most difficult. Have you stopped speaking English over there? Is it regional accents, or just general sloppiness? Although I can understand the old films with a...

Paulo Coelho: The Devil And Miss Prym

I loved it. It tells the tale of humanities struggle with the goings on inside our heads in an easy to read enjoyable way, with some very amusing one-liners. But I am a cynical atheist!:)

There are worse ones which I've given up on, but the worst one I've completed is 'The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break'- Something just compelled me to keep on reading. Yet ! Bookslut | The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break by Steven Sherrill

    Sylvia Plath

I found the Bell Jar boring, depressing and worse. An ex-friend lent it to me, she thought it was wonderful.
