The Alchemist is the first 'self-help' book i have read. Perhaps if i had read others of its kind before-hand i may not have taken to it as i did. But, it was all new to me, it was very different to anything i had read before.
To be truthful, the book could have had the opposite effect on me...
I am reading Oryx & Crake just now, Life of Pi is next up!
I thought The Alchemist was a great read. I found it to be one of those rare books that i just could not put down. I see Coehlo's writing has come in for some criticism, and also the books ending. I have no complaints about either...
On my last visit to Waterstone’s I purchased:
(Fiction)
Oryx & Crake…………….. Margaret Atwood
Vernon God Little………… DBC Pierre
The Alchemist……………. Paulo Coehlo
Life of Pi…………………. Yann Martel
Mr Candid………………… Jules Hardy
(Biography/Memior)
Dispatches………………… Micheal Herr
I have not long since finished reading this book, i thought it was a beautiful piece of storytelling. I cannot say if it is worthy of its position at the top of the BBC’s 100 best books poll (I have not read many of the other books from the list) but I can understand why it is loved by so many...
The oldest book I own is ‘Robinson Crusoe’. Apart from the heavy pencil scribbling on the inside pages (done when I was a kid) the book is in reasonably good nick. All the pages are there and in good order. The book has a dull yellow, almost ochre colour hard cover with a picture of Robinson...
Martin Amis - Yellow Dog
I found Amis’s style of writing difficult to follow at the outset. It was not until I had finished the first chapter before it all started to flow. It was not just the style of writing that was troubling me though, there are words in this book that I have never seen...
Here is the current betting (William Hill odds)
Margaret Atwood...... 2/1 fav
Monica Ali.................. 5/2
Zoe Heller................. 4/1
DBC Pierre................ 5/1
Damon Galgut........... 7/1
Clare Morrall.............. 8/1
Interesting to note that Clare Morrall's...
I am left feeling a little dissapointed by the shortlist. That is down to the fact there is only one book in the final six that i am actually interested in reading, that is, 'Vernon God Little' by DBC Pierre! I will probably also read Margaret Atwood's 'Oryx & Crake'...... if i can stomach the...
I prefer reading paperbacks, but once read a few times they do tend to look like they have been trampled on by a heard of elephants.
I only ever buy hardbacks if i really want to read the book. I know that if i dont buy there and then i will probably forget all about it and never get around...
I have not long finished reading ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ by Mark Haddon. This is a good book, different from anything else I have ever read. I would recommend others to read it, its an eye-opener. It gives a very good, convincing insight into the world of a young...
I have not read any of the books that have been long-listed yet, but Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" i will pick up on Tuesday.
Has anyone been reading any of the books long-listed for this years booker prize? If so what are your views on the books you have...
"My War Gone By, I Miss It So" by Anthony Loyd
I only started the book yesterday so have only taken in the first two chapters. It has me hooked though.
I paid a visit to Waterstones on Tuesday afternoon and picked up three books costing around £25. I wish i had known about it then!
PM is on its way!
Thanks for the welcome and helpfull messages. Much appreciated.
Regards
ALI
Can anyone tell me if there are monthly book review magazines out there? I stopped in at WH Smiths yesterday and was surprised to find there was no book related magazines on the shelfs. Plenty of film and television magazines, but nothing relating to books.
I should point out that i am in the...
I am a big fan of Elmore Leonard.
Leonards style of writing is right up my street. Fast, sharp dialogue that is always to the point. For those not familiar with Leonards work, a few of his books have been turned into films, the most notable being Jackie Brown, though the book was originally...
