That's from Auguries of Innocence, which I think you had a quote up from not all that long ago. A very valid question that is asked throughout literature. The dichotomies of language and implication of each end when referring to one seems to make it hard to think they could be independent...

Heh, yes Melville can get quite descriptive. However, if you don't enjoy that stuff I encourage you to skip those chapters, as they are easy to spot, and read the rest. I found it to be quite a good book, with a few amazingly written chapters knocking me on my ass in a manner of speaking. -True

Why? It has a good message, a great ethics system, and is as entertaining as any other novel I've read. Perhaps if you want to get rid of the religious dogma have them read the Jefferson Bible.
