Wow, what a good question! There are a lot of factors that I consider before buying a book. I'm a sucker for a sale, so I check the bargain tables first. Then I read the synopsis on the back and see if it looks at all interesting. I will read just about anything, but I hate feeling like "I...
I just bought the book, so I will let you know what I think of it! I also liked the movie, even though it was disturbing at times, so I imagine the book will be even better.
I love Amy Tan. Her stories are usually multi-generational and deal with relationships between mothers and daughters, so they are very much books for women, I think. I also think Anita Shreve is a great writer of women's fiction that wouldn't be classified as romantic or sappy.
Mo Hayder...
Oh, pants!... I forgot about United 93! Even though it was completely disturbing, it was by far the best of last year, IMO.
So my revised list goes like this:
1. United 93
2. Blood Diamond
3. Thank You for Smoking
with Little Miss Sunshine and Borat taking honorable mention.
Lot of...
Congrats!!! You will have a great time... I was nearly 30 before I ever left the States, and I loved Europe so much that I never went back. :)
Where do you plan to visit? I read London- which is a fantastic city- but will you travel to any other European cities?
Mine are for sure
1. Blood Diamond
2. Thank You For Smoking
3. Little Miss Sunshine and/ or Borat
I also really liked The Departed, but for me it was probably Scorsese's 3rd best gangster movie, so it's out of my top 3.
I wonder if you would like Harlan Coben's books? He is recommended by your Dan Brown, and if you like books that you can't put down and that keep you wondering what will happen, you will like Coben. Gone For Good is definitely my favorite of his books, and Tell No One is a close 2nd.

Granted, but then everyone on the planet loses partial hearing due to a massive shifting of the earth which creates a sonic boom heard 'round the world. This leaves everyone screaming "WHAT?!" constantly, and you are unable to ever get your point across, since you can't repeat yourself.

I think most King readers would vouch for The Stand as one of his best. That is a great book to start with (although it is really long), because it typifies his writing style and is a fantastic read. Even people who don't like King generally enjoy this book, and it is definitely among my faves...
This is really hard! I took this to mean best writers ever, for any age group... so in no particular order:
Graham Greene
John Steinbeck
Mark Twain
Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel)
Jane Austen
I think Steinbeck, Austen and Twain are fairly obvious selections. Dr. Seuss probably introduced...

Can you tell me what you thought of it? I have a lot of interest in Obama, especially since I am originally from Chicago. I've been eyeing his book in the bookstore for a few weeks now, but I can't bring myself to pay the 30 Euro to purchase it. Is it worth it?
Some of us have an advantage in that we take public transportation to work, so for me that gives me an extra hour or so of reading every day. It makes a big difference!
My favorite reads from last year were:
The Memory of Running, by Ron McLarty
The Kite Runner, by Khaled Husseini
and Birdman and The Treatment, by Mo Hayder... very violent, but so well written.
Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre won the Man Booker Prize in 2003. Some have hailed it as a modern-day Catcher in the Rye, while some have dismissed it as a poor satire of American adolescent culture. It could make for an interesting discussion.
The thing that killed LitW for me was (attn: HUGE spoiler alert!!!)
Yes, Signs slaps you in the face with its "message." He could have removed the whole spiritual aspect of the film and he wouldn't have lost anything; I even think the movie would have been better without that bit. But it...
I don't know how I missed this before, but that is possibly the weirdest thing I have ever heard in my life!!! LOL
So does this law that mean there are authorized rats that we import for some reason? Don't we have enough already?!
And what happens if a rat breaks this law?? Are they...
