    April Fools - New Stories

I seem to remember from being half asleep on Friday morning that BBC Radio 4's Today programme ran a story claiming that an old law had been uncovered that would mean Camilla's son would become King after Charlie. It was supposed to be something about her son taking precedence over William...

    Politics Primer

The Heywood book is very much a textbook but, as you say, it covers quite a bit. One idea is that if you see a reference cited in it for a subject you find interesting, you could then try the referenced book. This is a bit hit and miss so you might want to try libraries rather than buying at...

    Toni Morrison

I read Beloved and thought it was great. It haunted me for days afterwards. I keep meaning to get hold of more of her work - thanks for the recommendations.

    What's your occupation?

Sorry Billy, I'm a student (although in Wales, not England) and you'll be so pleased to hear the government are paying me handsomely to study :p

    The Clangers/Bagpuss

Arghhh, now I've got that awful theme music from Rhubarb and Custard stuck in my head. I bet it stays there all day now. :D

    Politics Primer

Well, my main interest is the making of foreign policy and one of my favourite books is "Constructing National Interests: The United Statesw and the Cuban Missile Crisis" by Jutta Weldes (published by the University of Minnesota Press). Weldes offers a comparison and analysis of the Crisis from...

RED WINE & THONTON'S! ...What was your best/worst dream?

I know, it's enough to put me off vodka ... nearly!

    Politics Primer

Sorry, I didn't notice this thread earlier or I would have replied. It's quite difficult to recommend a single book to such a huge subject but when I was an undergrad, I found the following really useful: Issues in World Politics, edited by Brian White, Richard Little and Michael Smith. I...

RED WINE & THONTON'S! ...What was your best/worst dream?

I had a vodka dream on New Year's Eve (obviously it was more like New Year's Day by the time I got to bed) about spiders and Prince Philip. Now that's a nightmare!

    I just finished reading...

Just finished Foucault's Pendulum. I know there is another thread that discusses the book so I won't go on too much. Even though it took me a while to get into it, it was a great read and very amusing in places.

    Best Cristmas Song

Yep, Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry is the one for me. Sorry if I spelt his name wrong. :o

    No more heros: writers

I saw this article as well. I laughed quite a bit at it, especially the section aimed at Woody Allen. I didn't get the feeling it was entirely serious but it will be interesting to see what letters they get as a result.

    Sideways

I loved it too! It was so subtle and charming and made a huge change to the movies I normally get to see.

    The Strangest Film Ever

I saw Napoleon Dynamite recently and didn't have a clue what was going on. Maybe it's because I'm British and so didn't get the humour? I just thought it was odd.

    Oliver

I love that song "who will buy this wonderful morning" - I could watch that scene over and over. I thought I was the only saddo who liked the film - guess I'm in good company!

    Guinness

horses coming out of big, white, surfy waves - like the advert. It also reminds me of Plymouth, where I used to drink it with friends occasionally.

    The Talking Parcel

I've been having exactly the same problems Emily. This was one of my favourite books as a child but it became lost somewhere in the stages of growing up and I have been trying to replace it. Good luck with your search.

    A letter to my daughter

Very moving Irene. It takes me back to my own childhood and the need to conform.
