Just wanted to update my last reply on this question. At the time I was reading it, I have since completed it and put up a review of Shaman's Crossing here
I think Steph performs a wonderful character profile with Jant, and the series basis is damn interestic (the Circle). I also thoguth the conceptual possibilities of Shift is a nice touch, and thought the flashbacks to Jant's past, depicting a dickensenain feel were the best parts of the novel...
I'm certainly not attempting to push any book on anyone - but I not would not use that reasoning (POV) to not read A Song of Ice and Fire, nothing Hobb has ever written is anywhere near so grand in scope, and althgouh I admrie Hobb greatly I don't really consider her in the same league...
I wouldlsay the current master of this type of work is George R.R. Martin, his A Song of Ice and Fire is IMHO the new pinnacle of epic fantasy thru 3 of a planned 7 books series. Thus far:
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows (later this year)
A...
Halfway through wit it as of now. I didn't start reading it until, mroe out of spite, because the publisher sent it to me so late. IMHO the best so far, which probably means fans of Fitz won't like it.
.
Whose doing that? Seems like a random comment. For he record I wouldn't put any of...
George R.R. Martin's dwarf is not a race. Tyrion is a human.
No she hasn't and if she has, someone is badly misinformed.
Robin Hobb writes epic fantasy (which is essentially just a branch off of High Fantasy which is synonmous with Tolkiensque Fantasy.
If you want to read Hobb's...
I can't wait for hsi site to go up - I ahve been trying to get a hold of Mr. Marco  as, I can't find out who his publicist is for his next project!
I think the Farseer trilogy is a pretty damn good epic fantasy series, and I think her other subsequent less popular series are much better than fans of the Farseer trilogy make them out to be. One thing I admire about the series is that for one it has done something others (Some of which have...
This to me, along with M. John Harrison's Light and Zoran Zivkovic's Fourth Circle was the best novel released last year.
We have talked about this here before, so I'm just going to point out my review Here. This is one of the most stunning debuts in a long time IMHO>
I can't wait...
Forgive me, the question isn't directed at me , but no they are not. The Dark Elf trilogy is part of the Forgotten Realms line. The "Drizzt" novels are as follows and should be read as such:
-The Dark Elf Trilogy:
Homeland
Exile
Sojourn
-The Icewindale Trilogy (came out before...
A couple I enjoyed (tehse are masterpieces)
The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers
Behold the Man by Michael Moorcock
Repllay by Ken Grimwood
Up the Line by Robert Silverberg
Doomsdaybook by Connie Willis
Time Gifts by Zoran Zivkovic
I generally don't likw particpating in open to the public polls, I know whats popular, I can see the Best Seller Lists. I like both Rowling and Tolkien, but any lists that strongly support them as the best or highest rated is to heavily waited on elements I don't use myself.
The peoplw that...
Like my last post the June thread noted, I had been reading Vellum by Hal Duncan (which comes out in August), and give it the highest possible recomendation - ever bit as profound a debut as Susanna Clarke last year IMHO. Wonderful book, possibly the best of the year thus far.
I just...
.
Yeah it's Gemmell, my fault :)
I wasn't recomending Jonathan Strange and Norrell to you, jsut pointign to it as an example of a high amgic book that was actually well written, as pwilson say, not all people peopel will like it - although it was Time Magazine's Fiction novel of the...
The whole point of A Song of Ice and Fire is that magic had been lost and through the series has been slowly building up again - note the return of Dragons, the power of necromancy returning to the Mel, and Beric's band, the powers returning to the population where Dany is, the Others...
I reviewed Stroud's Amulet of Samarkand here. I have read worse (which I will get to shortly) but I didn't really enjoy, compared to some other works directed at juveniles like works by Pullman, Nix, or Barker's Abarat novels.
Going back to the worst statement, I just thought Eragon was...
Whats maddening about Moorcock is that a lot of his novels tie into the Eternal Champion storyline, and the nature of those stories and Moorcock's revisitng of them make chronological reading a pain.
That and the renaming of many of his works makes it somewhat confusing.
