    historical fiction anyone?

I am quite enjoying it - it is written in a fairly "historical-like" manner, although the subject matter is completely fanciful! It was not what I expected going in, I guess I would describe it as Jane Austen meets fantasy with a good dose of English folklore thrown in. If you have the money...

    historical fiction anyone?

It's not fiction, but I recently read Alison Weir's book "Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley" which was quite good. I learned lots about Mary, the tricky part is keeping all the Scottish lords straight.

    historical fiction anyone?

I really loved Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome series. The first one is The First Man in Rome. They're a bit long and heavy, but really engaging. She tells the stuff from a bunch of viewpoints, so you get both male and female perspectives. I tried Margaret George's book about Cleopatra...

    Janet Evanovich

I would also suggest Sara Paretsky, she's a little grittier and Carolyn G Hart (start with Death on Demand). Evanovitch also has another series that's even more degrading (if you can imagine!) that she wrote under a pseudonym - I believe it's being re-released now that she's a big star :)

I think you're on the right track and it was an Oz book. I remember it from the movie they did in the mid-80's (which drew from a number of the books?) Maybe you'll have to re-read all the Oz books?

    Isabel Allende: Eva Luna

Allende makes wonderful use of language in all her books. As you say, I think House of Spirits is vastly superior to Eva Luna. Neither of the other two from the same period, Stories of Eva Luna and Of Love and Shadows are the equals of House of Spirits either (in my opinion). If you want to...

    Hello!

Thanks for those suggestions, I'll check them out. As far as the historical stuff goes, I'm less interested in the broad sweeping historical books (eg. the history of modern Europe in 800 pages) and more interested in smaller, more specific stories. For example, I just finished Simon Singh's...

    Hello!

Hello everyone, My name is Kathleen and I live in British Columbia, Canada. My current reading obsessions are historic non-fiction (especially on small, specific topics) and time-travelling fiction ala Jasper Fforde, Kage Baker, and Audrey Niffenegger. If anyone has any recommendations in...
