In my opinion, advertising doesn't sell books. So that leaves publicity and word of mouth. To get publicity you need to already be a celebrity, or be unique and outrageous. To get word of mouth, your book needs to be so incredibly good, or so different, that people will talk about it instead...
And even if you do get published, you probably won't make enough money to live on. (A friend of mine published four books and never made enough money to quit his day job.)
Actually, I do consider the lead characters in a Margret Atwood novel to be symbolic of all women. (I received better marks in grade 10 English when I did that.) Since no one else has taken a stab at the symbolism of The Blind Assassin, here's my best attempt at a B+.

I read it a long time ago, but that's what I remember too. I thought she was very weak and unrealistic. Romance isn't really Hemingway's forte. I've read some of his Spanish Civil War short stories. They were excellent.
