Actually, I should not blame just the men - some of the women were pretty disgusting too. I have trouble understanding what kind of mother would condone her teenage daughter being married off to some guy 2 or 3 times her age who already has several other wives. Call me close-minded, but that...
I liked "Under the Banner of Heaven". It was fascinating to learn that polygamy is this widespread in the US - I thought it was only a few people who actually still practiced this, but it turns out there are lots. It's distressing to read about, because there are lot of people who seem to be...
I love all the Stephen King quotes. He just pulls them out of his hat with what seems to be such ease, I'm always envious.
Here's another one I thought of - this is from Brian Andreas. Check out his www.storypeople.com Web site some time, interesting stuff.
"For a long time, she flew...
Shari - I loved Virgins of Paradise; I learned so much about Egypt and about how women live in such a repressive society. I haven't read anything else by Barbara Wood - I kind of forgot about her and she dropped off my list, so I'm glad you remineded me of how much I enjoyed this book. I need...
What kind of librarian would encourage you to take only one book, and the thinnest one at that? Sounds like the literary equivalent of Nurse Ratchett!
I notice that I actually get twitchy and uncomfortable if I'm stuck in a situation where I have to wait for something and I don't have a book...
pwilson - Darwin is not as dry as you might think, although some of his writing can be pretty dense. For example, later in life he got very interested in worms and published reams of material about that. You know the phrase about how God seems to have an inordinate fondness for beetles? Well...
Shari, you've been looking at my reading list! Of all the books you mentioned, the only ones I haven't read are Plainsong, The Other Boleyn Girl and Map of the World. Of the ones you mentioned, I loved Middlesex and Life of Pi (To Kill a Mockingbird is in a class by itself, I think)...
Too funny - I also have "Imajica", and it has a book mark about three quarters of the way through; I pulled it off the shelf the other day to move it and saw that the acidity of the book mark was starting to leave a shadow on the page...that's how long it's been sitting there. Easily ten years...
I think this is a great idea for a thread! I've never read "A River Runs Through It', because I didn't much care for the film, but after reading this passage I'm adding it to my list. It sounds lovely and evocative.
Here is one of my favorites; anything else I would pretty much have to go...
I went to Foyle's when I was in London earlier this year, with expectations of something wonderful because I had read so much about it. I was disappointed; although a fairly large store it also seemed fairly ordinary. In America we have so many huge book stores that stock only the latest best...
People on this site are so generous with their ideas, that is SO nice.
I love Stephen Jay Gould, and I've read pretty much everything he's written. He's wonderful for someone like myself who is not a professional in the field. I'm really interested in genetics and evolution, and he's very...
I read a lot more when I was younger and had more time - also, I was reading lighter material then. Now that I'm older and have a career and other demands on my time I read maybe a book a week.
I'm always puzzled when people say they don't have enough time to read. You make the time, same...
Clueless...I too learned to read before I started school - my poor mother would fall asleep reading "Baby Animal Stores" for the 5,000th time, and I would elbow her and demand "Read, Mom!!". What else could she do?
When I was a teenager, if I had done something really bad my punishment was...
Thanks! I read Anna Karenina years ago and did like it, I think I still have it around here somewhere. Have not read any of the others mentioned, though I've heard of all of them.
I picked up "Galileo's Daughter" by Dava Sobel yesterday, just because it was here, but after about 50 pages...
I too have trouble transitioning from one book to another, especially if I really liked the book just completed. If it's by an author I didn't know before, or one who has other books that I haven't read yet, I usually go right out and find another book by the same writer while I'm still in the...
I don't know, but I wish I had kept a list. I keep track of all the books I own in a data base program, so I know when I bought each one and what I paid for it, but that doesn't tell me anything about all the books I've borrowed from the library, or the trashy ones that I don't bother to log in...
Ooooh, I've been to Tattered Cover too - a good one!
I also remembered Acres of Books right here in beautiful Long Beach. One of my favorite places to go on a rainy day. It's huge and dusty and things are sometimes in very whimsical order, but if you have the time it's great. There are...
Yep, Southern California - Omigod...I'm a Val!...brought up in Northridge, and now I live in Long Beach, which is sort of the antithesis of where I ever thought I would end up, but here I am. Have you ever noticed that just about every crime that's committed, especially if it's a really, really...
