Having not read the series, my opinion is not to be taken as fact. However, I have heard similar comments as those in this thread. The series is too much like LOTR and it is way too drawn out. Aside from this, I think Jordan is a good author and have enjoyed his other books.
I think it is definately one of the greatest "scenes". It came as great relief for me, as I was sure Pug was lost to the world of the Great Ones. Looking back, it seems foolish to have doubted his return to glory.
The colour of Magic was my first Pratchett book. Terry Pratchett Books has a list of all the books in order and the main characters of those books. Also, it shows the different themes of each.

Having just finished Christopher Rowley's Bazil Broketail series, my favorite characters would have to be Relkin and Bazil. They have such a "buddy cop" feel to them that I just love.
The book that got me started on fantasy was Magical Kingdom for Sale...Sold by Terry Brooks. Soon I was onto Shannara, which led to reading LotR, which led to everything else. The Hobbit would be a good place to start, As would The Shannara series. Thay have a less blood and guts than some, but...
