Patience is a virtue you know:p . Hold on, I'm on page 31.....
-StillILearn - As for garlic... Have had a rummage in the kitchen and could only find garlic powder. Commencing to punch holes in the top of container so that I can string it around my neck. :D
Er, mmm, scratching of head.... I think I need to go and read a few pages back for I dare join this little forray into bookyland.
I'll be back, she says cautiously, wondering if she can make sense of the past few pages. Ooh I do hope so, this looks very entertaining.:D
Peder:
We have been wrapped around the axle here on two questions: does he ever feel sorry for what he has done, and does he ever really come to love her.
As I've only just started the book and am only 20ish pages into it I can't really comment on whether he is 'sorry' or whether he truly...
To Peder and Pontalba - your welcomes are welcomed :D
I've only managed to get through first 20 or so pages. Had to refresh my french a little. Hopefully as I get further along I'll stop having to take deep breaths and recover from bouts of indignation. Just as well I don't have high...
Aw shucks.... I guess Ms Cornwell's two latest novels will have to wait because curiosity has got the best of me. Plus a little bookworm gave me a copy of Lolita today (you know who you are and I'm eternally grateful ;) )
I did think about reading Lolita awhile back but just couldn't...
Talking of all things oriental. Does anyone remember seeing the tv series 'The Watermargin'. I believe it was based in China. Not sure if it was based on a novel but it would be great to see it again - although it was many moons ago that I had the pleasure of following the series:rolleyes:
I believe it was John Wyndham. Another good book of his, in my humble opinion, is 'The Chrysalids'. It's been a while - oh ok so it's been around 30 years - since I read it but it left an impression. If memory serves me right, it's in the future after a nuclear war and the life unfolds...
A truly beautiful book, in my humble opinion. The back book cover says it's based on 'true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha'. Either way, I really enjoyed reading this one and look forward to seeing the movie. The story is a little painful at times as you begin to relate...
I don't recall reading anything that truly scared me. But one book comes to mind - The Keep by F Paul Wilson (published in 1981). They made a film out of it which, in my opinion, was a poor immitation to the actual imagery of the book. I've never liked the dark and the 'being' that emerges to...
I was thinking more on the lines of translation - how does the Torah compare with, let's say, the Kings James version of the bible. Showing my ignorance here as I am assuming there is only one translation of the Torah. Whereas there are many translations of the Bible as christians know it.
'I never looked for it, gave it no name, yet I knew it always, when the gift of peace came.' Voyager - Diana Gabaldon
'I look back on my course of action as lunacy; and yet at the time it seemed the only way out.' Watcher in the Shadow - Geoffrey Household
'Sometimes incredbly good...
I've read the Bible from start to finish several times now. At one time I read it through and did some basic research too - who the author of each book was, when it was written and the time period they covered. It made it slightly more interesting to read. Wouldn't mind having a go at the...
I tend to keep track of the weather. Since moving to the USA I've been paying more attention than usual since I now have to worry about tornadoes and hurricanes. Not that it made too much difference having been without electricity and running water for the past 3.5 weeks due to Katrina. Not...
Jamie Frasier - yes indeedy. I can just see him now sporting his kilt standing tall in windswept Scotland. Then there's the arrogant but oh so yummy Mr Darcy. And Jondalar from Jean Auel's novels.
It's been a while since I read Lovely Bones but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was beautifully written. The language was simple which, to me, fitted in with the book being about a young girl. I was initially weary of reading about someone so young who was brutally murdered and felt like...
I've read the Time Travellers and really enjoyed it once I got used to the layout - hopping from one time to another. It was interesting to read along and see how the time-slips played out - how they were connected.
I also enjoy Barbara Erskine's books. They are not specifically about...
Hi Sirmyk - Sounds very interesting and is now on my list of books to read. I've been putting ideas on paper for years now but nothing substantial and so I'm very envious of those that actually get thier work finished and published - congratulations. Have you started your second novel yet :)...
These employers may have had unreasonable expectations. I believe Au pairs are generally students looking for a summer job or young people looking for the 'overseas' experience. Perhaps what this family needs is a qualified Nanny. But then they'd probably have to pay a whole lot more and...
Reading, listening to the rain as it beats against the window pane, the stillness that comes when it's snowed overnight, the sound of your footsteps as you walk through snow, the glisten of frost in the trees on a crisp winter's morning, being in the company of friends, the theatre, music...
