Aaargghh I'm getting dizzy from running around in circles looking for more clues to this strange relationship between VV and TP. They both give off conflicting signals. And it's more confusisng to read, 'I hurried past the rear truck, and had another glimpse of my old friend, in tense...
Whatever it was that Pnin held against VV certainly was only reinforced by VVs reaction to Liza. And we only have Liza's word of Pnin's forgiveness. I wonder what it was about Pnin that so fascinated VV. I get the impression that VV saw Pnin as one of his insects to be pinned and studied...
Funny thing about culture is that it's ingrained in everyone. Youngsters may try to ignore it but it always returns to them in adulthood. Growing up you can't help but take at least a portion of it with you - it's there in the nurturing we receive from parents and relatives and from the...
I'm sure you'll know this one, just idle curiosity you understand, but is Dmitri an accomplished author. Did he follow in his father's footsteps? Just thought I'd ask, as you do.
Looks like some rereading is in order to get a fuller understanding of the relationship between VV and Pnin. I've still not got my head around the true nature of their relationship. As the narrator VV must have had substantial interaction with our Timofey to convey his character so eloquently...
Well, I am now the proud owner of 5 Nabokov novels: Lolita, The Enchanter, Ada all of which the Book Fairy sent on gossamer wings of silver and gold and recently, courtesy of a local book sale, Glory and Invitation to a Beheading.
I do have other authors impatiently waiting in the wings but...
Glory - Vladimir Nabokov
Invitation to a Beheading - Vladimir Nabokov
Cause of Death - Patricia Cornwall (although I've already read it a while back)
The Sinner - Tess Gerritsen (a first time for this author)
Caesar's Women - Colleen McCullough (another first)
Fatal Voyage - Kathy Reichs (a...
I've got one that waves its arms about whilst sticking out tongue - trouble is I don't know how to copy/paste to show you:mad: So you'll just have to use your (quirky:p) vivid imagination.:D
I've just received 'The Universe in a Single Atom' by the Dalai Lama. I've enjoyed documentaries based on the plight of the Tibetans and have been interested in the Dalai Lama's philosophical views on life. Plus he has a great smile:)
Good luck with your submission. And as the other member-writers of this forum know, it takes a lot of work and determination to write and stick at it. I enjoyed your writing style and also agree with Halo on the 'wordiness' of some parts of your work. And I'm sure, like many published...
Well if we're sharing our personal favourites.... Out of the meagre three that I've read (Lolita, The Enchanter, Pnin), Pnin wins hands down. Each have that literary magic that seems to be the key to VNs writings - and I once again bow down to his majestic ability to spin a good yarn using the...
I'm not sure that VV had a dislike for Pnin. I think he found Pnin a curiosity to research and study. This brings to mind something VN threw in about VV's character:
'Some people - and I am one of them - hate happy ends. We feel cheated. Harm is the norm. Doom should not jam. The...
Any pudding/desert - treacle tart and custard sounds just about right - followed by that (just in reach) coffee.
Poor Peder - I can see him now. Brows furrowed in concentration, a smile here and there and lots of clicking:D He'll need a coffee break after all that. May I suggest you take...
