I second the recommendation of 'The Day of the Triffids' and also recommend the following:
'After the Flood (Efter floden) by P.C. Jersild
Set in islands in the Baltic sea about 30 years after "the flood" which likely was a nuclear war. People are valued by their skills from the world before...
I recommend beginning with 'Tunnel in the Sky' which is one of Heinlein's books for youths. It doesn't mean a whole lot however, he also wrote 'Starship Troopers' as a book for youths.
After 'Tunnel in the Sky' you could try some of the more controversial books that depends more on personal...
I recommend 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' by Mark Haddon if you haven't read it already. I think it's fairly recent. I'm not sure that's what you're looking for but I've got the impression that most people regardless of what they usually read can enjoy it unless you dislike...
It's odd to see relatively tall buildings only represented by their shadows.
The Sergel Plaza infamous for its drug sale.
A miniature golf court looking a bit queer from this perspective. My place doesn't show at this view but this is the island on which I live.
Saw him on Letterman once where he told the story about how they had let the oxygen or something like it go out of the passenger part of a plane so the passenger had passed out and just thought that he had fallen asleep during the flight. When Cruise told this story it kept being interrupted...
I think that Heinlein's portrayal of women is something of a dual sided coin but I don't think that it's extremely sexist and I certainly don't think that it's misogynistic.
In 'Stranger in a Strange Land' three of the women are making chores and serving because that's what they are employed...
I'd say that the biggest change probably is that the setting is the 21:st century rather than the 19:th century.
Lots of flags in the trailer though. It almost seems like it may try to invoke Folk pride and unity.
My two favourites are 'After the Flood' (Efter floden) by P.C. Jersild and 'In the Country of Last Things by Paul Auster.
The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham and The Drowned World by J.G. Ballard aren't too bad either.
I wasn't very fond of it as I grew sick of the characters and their...
This thread isn't specifically about the English subject but besides that I don't think that it's uncommon to include translations in the subject of "national languages".
I was assigned a Swedish translation of 'Animal Farm' in the Swedish subject in a high school in Sweden for example...
My suggestions would be:
The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung), Franz Kafka (short story)
1984, George Orwell / Kallocain, Karin Boye
The Stranger (L'etranger), Albert Camus
Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte...
I think I've mentioned this several times before but I really hated the romantic interest in 'A Farewell to Arms' by Hemingway because she was such a goose. A book has never affected me more than 'A Farewell to Arms' did.
I'm amused by movies such as Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Storytelling, Buffalo '66, Drop Dead Gorgeous and Series 7.
When it comes to comedy movies my taste seems to be geared towards the American productions.
'War of the World' is based on a book. Not all new movie versions are based on previous versions. Sometimes new versions manage to change the content in ways the previous versions didn't.
I plan to read the book and skip this movie until it's shown on the TV.
P.S. 'Lord of the Rings' had...
