deffinately the wells battle with the Asha'man by jordan, and the later skirmishes in the mountains between Illian and Altara - Dragon vs the Return respectivly.
i'll repeat allot of people and say the Legend book by gemmel as well as the Hawk Queen and The Rigante series by the same author...
those scenes you describe Self, are what i look for in the books i read, the scenes where you are pulled in. If their are more than onbe in a book i generally don't end up sleeping but i feel just as rested as if i had.
i'll read his books but i dont like him, it's much like the factthat i can't stand cortney cox but i will listen to the music she did with hole.
Just 'cos they are annoying people doesn't meen you can't enjoy their work.
it was totally in character as, to pug, the spectators were not innocent bystanders as you put it becuase they were reviling in the blood and gore of the participants

The Liveship Trilogy is a good read though i found it a little long...
I'd recomend the Amtrak Wars series by Patrick Tilley... Not a fantasy but a post-apocolyptic sci-fi with both magic and suptle character development, with some nice tech thrown in to round it all off.
I'm only on the 2nd book at the moment my self but it's been a damn fine read so far with...
