I use the tactic mentioned above of comparing a reviewer's opinion of a book you feel strongly about to gauge whether you share similar tastes, but the reviews that count most to me are the ones from this site and those of an Irish guy I met on the PC Gamer UK forum.

That would seem an excellent suggestion, and in addition another of Jostein Gaarder's books, the Solitaire Mystery, which is, in my opinion, even better. The other one that springs to mind is "His Dark Materials," which raises some important philosophical/theological issues.
Started 'The Republic' by Plato and I have to say that, so far at least, I have found some of his reasoning really quite weak and am not too impressed with it. However, I shall reserve judgement until I've finished it.
Has anyone read any Alfred Bester? I had 'The Stars my Destination' recommended to me by some random friendly guy whilst browsing in Waterstones', and it seems to be critically acclaimed from many quarters, so I was wondering if there was a second opinion on offer.
