I don't know if anyone in Britain's heard of the course, but I'm just finishing my studies for AEA (Advanced Extension Award) History. Apparently it's similar to the old S-levels, and it's really thoroughly interesting. Dealing with the theory of history and historiography rather than any actual...
I do exactly the same, I keep track of a number of quotations from all variety of sources and later note them down; when reading a book I always have a sheet of paper in addition to my bookmark to note any interesting passages, and then add them all once I've finished and I take a notebook to...
The space probes and telescopes really pick up some stunning images, stunning in every respect. not just their beauty but when you factor in their titanic scale and, in the case of other stars and nebulae, the age of the images, it really is incredible. And people wonder why there are so many...
Completely irrelevant, but I've just noticed that the source of our signatures is the same (albeit fictional) person in both cases.
Salvor Hardin, what a guy. And Isaac Asimov, what an author.
I spent three weeks in Nepal this easter teaching in a school and working at a leprosy colony. Nepal is, I think, the 10th poorest country in the world, but despite that the kids were all really happy and upbeat, they loved school and adored learning and were really friendly, and you saw a lot...
Niccolo Machiavelli's 'The Prince' is my current read. Although Machiavelli gets a bad press, essentially he was simply prepared to take utilitarianism to its logical (and sometimes horrifying, it has to be said) extremes, at a time when Italy was in constant political instability and imbalance.
I read every night before I go to sleep (sometimes for far too long, leaving me rather tired come the morning), whilst having breakfast in the morning, during the journeys to and from school (though this sometimes mean that I almost miss my bus stop), at lunch or during a lesson if it gets...
Shouldn't legophile be someone who loves to talk, as in ancient greek lego (apologies for the horrible Roman character rendition) means to speak, whilst logos means word?
What's more amusing is putting -phobia on the end instead of -philia. Then one gets a 36-letter (or thereabouts)...
None of the above, to be honest. I'm healthy, have far more money than I need or deserve, am still in full-time education and would hate to be famous. I'm happy as I am, really!
There's a comics and graphic novels forum just a bit further down the page! Try looking in there for a bit more discussion on that topic!
I also love comics, both western ones and manga, some of my favourites being:
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind: Possibly THE best graphic novel in...
Oh, so he suffers from multiple personality disorder as well now does he? Well everyone's just full of revelations today.
(Just in case you didn't notice, this post comes complete with a hearty dose of ;) )
Litany: But Monkey Island 2 DID have a really wierd ending! Chuckie? The carnival? AAAAGGHHH! I for one am glad at the turn CoMI took, although many die-hard fans refuse to accept the two later games (In EfMI's case, with good reason.) The tale of your brother is nonetheless highly amusing...
Read it already and it is indeed superb, a truly scary and prophetic dystopian vision (as I seem to have already said on several occasions in my short time on this forum!)
My to-read list as far as what I myself own is none too large, perhaps 10 books or so large, but my mum has been an avid reader for most of her life and so I have a great resource right there (just recently I found The Man who was Thursday and Machiavelli's Il Principe lurking on her bookshelf...
