    Favorite new authors

Some of the newer authors I'm enjoying. Michael Cunningham (I think he just slips under the last 10 years criterion) Dave Eggers - both his fiction and his memoir Chuck Palahniuk - at least his earlier stuff Yann Martel

    Gabriel García Márquez

I'll step in to "defend" Marquez. I read 100 Years of Solitude a couple of months ago and really liked it. It is a little slow, but the characters are well-developed and I got caught up in the journey of this family. It does take a little work to get into it, but I found it to be worth it. I...

    Chuck Palahniuk: Haunted

There's some discussion of Haunted over in the Palahniuk thread in the author forum. The condensed version of my take - it felt like he had a lot of short stories that he really liked, but didn't want to publish an anthology of short stories. I got tired of the connective story after a while and...

    Stephen King: Dark Tower Series

I know lots of people have said they didn't like the ending, but I thought it was perfect. Unexpected, but completely in keeping with the journey. Just my $.04 (inflated due to gas and transport costs)

    Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time

Read through book 4. Put it down. Make up your own ending to the series. It will save you countless hours of grief. The only thing you'll miss are the desciption of what everyone in the land is wearing. [/bitterness]

    Post a poem

The Peace of Wild Things Wendell Berry When despair grows in me and I wake in the middle of the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come...

    What Do You Drive?

I had my last car for ten years. When the mechanic said I needed new brakes that would cost more than the value of the car, it was time to reload. Most of my friends buy a new car when the cost to fix the one they currently drive exceeds their monthly payment, (or when they get bored with it) so...

    What Do You Drive?

I would agree with you about the inefficiency, but compared to the averages around here of trucks or SUVs that get 10-15mpg, my 30 feels pretty good. We're hoping by the time we have to buy my wife her next car, we'll be able to find a hybrid that 1) holds enough people to fit our clan and 2)...

    What Do You Drive?

2005 Pontiac Vibe. The only thing sexy or cool about it is the 30 mpg.

    Cheap Book Finds

Our system had a library sale back in February. I walked out with 26 books and spent $21. As for space - they can always be stacked in a corner. At least that's what I tell my wife.

    Alternate History

A couple I've enjoyed. Resurrection Day - Brendan Dubois (If the Cuban Missle Crisis had turned into a shooting war) The Plot Against America - Philip Roth (Follows the journey of one American Jewish family in the WWII era when the US allies itself with Nazi Germany to stay out of the war.)...
