I used to love Stephen King, especially Different Seasons, The Stand, The Talisman, Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot and Misery.
I think his best stuff was written during his cocaine days (I hadn't known this until about a month ago!).
After Misery, everything I read by him just seemed to get...
Bunny, that suggestion is so untypical of what I had in mind. Yet, from the reviews I've found on the net, that first one seems irresistable. Heck, I've put them on my reading list!
My mom used to read fairy tales to me when I was a little guy. In fact, I think Daughter of the Forest is a...
I'd put her tastes in general fiction, but definitely something that would tug on the heartstrings.
I did buy her Memoirs of a Geisha last year but I don't think she really got into it for some reason.
Hey all...I'm having a really hard time shopping for a book for my mom. She doesn't read as many as I do, so any time I get her one I want to make sure it is exceptional.
I'd say her tastes run along the Oprah vein but I don't want to get her something too fluffy. She's a very young-minded...
I'm glad to see I'm not alone here. I too was put off from reading from the resentment of being forced to read the most dry, boring and for the most part depressing books.
I didn't read a thing for a few years after highschool. Thankfully my old girlfriend's sister insisted I read Stephen...
OK. Stop whatever you're doing right now and run out and get Necroscope by Brian Lumley. This is the first of a 13(!) book series and is the most original vampire story I've read.
I have read the first four so far and very highly recommend them!
Very fun read.
Would it make me any less a man to recommend an Oprah Book Club recommendation? ;)
I read I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Well not face to face, but I have exchanged emails with:
Robert Sawyer
Greg Iles
and the sadly late George Alec Effinger
All of them were very gracious.
Oh, and who'd I'd like to meet? Easy:
Dan Simmons
Clive Barker
Check out Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons, one of my favorite books ever.
Also Clive Barker is great....try The Damnation Game, or Imajica (although Imajica won't scare the pants off you, it will amaze you)
Huh. Never heard of that, oddly enough....
Seeing as Hannibal was one of the biggest literary disappointments of my life, I find it hard to get excited over it though :(

This is the best book reviews magazine I've picked up. Only one store here in Ottawa carries it. But it's very much worth tracking down or even subscribing to.
Heh, you're bang on there Murphyz.
Sure enough, my second page was considerably faster being easier to read.
I started it again and my wpm was even lower than the first starting page :p
Owen Meany is the only Irving I've read and I did laugh out loud as well. But the scene that did it to me was the description of a waterskiing mishap.
I have a bit more of a slapstick sense of humour though :)
Cider House Rules has been on my list for a long time but every now and then I...
It seems you enjoy the dark side of literature
So. Drop everything and run to your local bookshops and get Necroscope by Brian Lumley.
This is first in oh, about 13 novels of the most original vampire premise I have read.
I have read the first four so far and enjoyed them immensely!!
My Grandmother gave me a bookmark in 1972 when I was 10 years old. I still use it today and it would kill me if I ever lost it.
It was just one of those bookmarks you get from giftshops, with tassles. It's quite faded now but it's dark blue with a picture of a night owl and the words:
This...
OK I'll keep the thread alive a bit more :)
5, eh? OK tough but off the top of my head,
1) Imajica - Clive Barker
2) Hyperion - Dan Simmons
3) Carrion Comfort - Dan Simmons
4) Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris
5)
I have to cheat. I'm leaving #5 a tie between these suspense novels...
